99 legacy decel hell
Help it's so bad as soon as you let off the gas it grinds, usually I just push in clutch and it's all quite. But today it did not, now I need to fix it but what is it I jacked up the car and it is coming from the front end for sure more of a click when there's no real weight on it no idea what it is do I need a new tranny or front dif. I just bought the car and it's my first Subaru kinda bad start haha it's a 99 legacy l wagon 5 speed Edited July 5, 2015 by 99 legacy decel hell
987687
Does it make the sound if you just rev the engine up in neutral? No idea what you're talking about "more of a click when there's no real drain on it". Some periods and commas might help your case.... First thing I'd suspect is you have an exhaust heatshield rattle, they can make an absolutely terrible that sounds like the end of the world. Get under the car and see if any of them are loose and rattling around. If they are, welding them back into place is the best option. If you don't have a welder you can use beefy hose clamps to hold them in place. Or you can just rip them off entirely... 99 legacy decel hell
It deffinitly sounds like a problem in the tranny, or dif until it kept going once clutch was engaged. Alsoo put some punctuation in there haha sorry.
99 legacy decel hell
Also in neutral free revving it's silent
idosubaru
Description is hard to read drain the front diff fluid and check for bits, chunks, debris. sounds like the front differentional. other possibilities: heat shieldsfront axle inner joints transmission input shaft bearings or main shaft bearings. for front diff or bearings just replace the transmission: www.car-part.com
99 legacy decel hell
What cars will the tranny swap from ?
idosubaru
www.car-part.com Any 1999 2.2 equipped vehicle will swap - impreza or legacy. Any 1999 2.5 equipped vehicle will work (Legacy, Outback, Forester, Impreza) if you also swap the rear differnential so the final drive ratios match. And it may be the case that you don't even need to swap the rear diff of 2.5 vehicles, they can vary but in general 2.2's are 3.9 final drive and 2.5 vehicles are 4.11. But not always. 2000+ should work too but someone should verify...

Bushwick
Before you go swapping out the drivetrain, confirm what's wrong 1st so you don't make more work for yourself only to discover a brake issue was culprit. Suppose basic things I'd think to check are: 1. Tires all same size? 2. Is there fluid in the trans/diff? 3. If you are decelerating, does the sound go away with clutch pedal pressed in? 4. Are you saying the sound isn't there while accelerating? 5. Does the sound go away when you are pressing the brakes? Do the brakes pulse or grab? 6. Have you gotten under the car and visually inspected for broken suspension bits, broken engine mounts, areas rubbing, heat shield touching driveshaft, etc.? 7. If you force FWD, does the sound get louder, quieter, stay the same? Just things I'd try and rule out 1st. A video at LEAST 1 minute long of the sound (w/o talking, w/o radio blasting, w/o AC blasting, everything that makes sound turned OFF) would be really helpful. I say at LEAST a minute long as some people will record for 5 seconds with radio blaring and ask what's wrong...... Post a video here and might get a more definitive answer. If the sound changes while you are doing something, be sure to say what you are doing i.e. "I'm lifting off accelerator in 2nd gear and now sound starts" or "I'm braking and it's changing". idosubaru
that's a good point - how sure are you this is front diff/trans related and not inner axle DOJ? his is a manaul trans so step #7 above doesn't apply, manuals don't have FWD fuse or option. 99 legacy decel hell
There is fluid tires are all the same #3 the sound did go away when clutch was pushed but starting this morning just constantly grinding also comes and goes not a constant grind for when the clutch is depressed #4 there is little to no sound when accelerating. #5brakes are fine does not matter for sound. #6 I will check for motor mounts did not think of that had it up in the air deffinitly in the front not nessesarily tranny/dif #7 it's a manual not sure if possible will post vid tommorow driving work van lol

Bushwick
When you say "constant", is it making noise at idle now? If you free-rev the engine while parked in Neutral, is it making noise then too? (I'm by no means a Subaru bible and others here know way more about these and oddities with them, was just thinking of things worth checking. Some cars a bad engine mount for example could allow engine to load differently during decel and hit exhaust on unibody, for example. Just one of those "you wouldn't believe until you see it things :/) Edited July 8, 2015 by Bushwick

Bushwick
So will the axles from my stock tranny work on the new tranny from an rs 2.5 What year is the transmission you apparently purchased and is it a manual or auto? Filling in the blanks should net more responses. I don't know enough about these to answer so hopefully someone else will once you've explained more.
