jdgmbi1
If this has been asked already, sorry, but I didn't see it. I realize this is going to be a question that nobody really knows because it is what the market will bear. I am an original owner of a 1984 Subaru GL, 2 door. Everything on it is original. Miles 120,000, no rips or tears to the interior, paint is in decent shape, runs well, tires are good, everything works,... I have decided to sell it for no other reason than, there is no reason (other than sentiment) to keep it. I realize it isn't worth much, but I am curious as to how much, or would it be better to part it out, donate it,... Thanks to anyone who throws in their two bits. l75eya
Automatic, manual, front wheel drive, 4wd? In very nice condition they can fetch upwards of 4k. Give us more details, photos if you can, and list anything it was optioned with.
jdgmbi1
Sorry about the delay. Got a little busy. It's a 5 speed, front wheel drive, 2 door, cruise control, set up for a/c, but doesn't have it, tilt steering wheel, original Subaru stereo, has no tears in upholstery or head liner, carpet's are in good shape, the trunk carpet is new, comes with two snow tires, new exhaust, new alternator. Tires good, paint is pretty good, but the black around the rear windows as you can see in the picture is peeling. The biggest issue is that the door panel on the passenger has a big hole (about 6" in diameter). The car is pretty original and has 125k miles. Ok. One small problem. I have no idea as to how to get these photos on. The photo's are on my desktop and in my Picasa? Sorry.
rdweninger
So, not 4wd. That will affect the value. Also depends on that part of the US you are in. Where you located?
jdgmbi1
No, it's front well drive. I am in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Subaru's seem to be popular here, but that is just my opinion. Thanks for your reply.
rdweninger
These cars hold up pretty well in the PNW. Other states use salt on their winter roads .... that's no beuno! Also, that's why we have a good stock of them. Back east, some would pay good money for your Soob.
jdgmbi1
I am sure. Yea there is no rust on it. Just have to find the correct person I guess.
l75eya
With everything being said, I'd start with an asking price of around the 3-4 k range. I think 4 would be wishful thinking though. I'd haggle from those points though. Anybody else got numbers to suggest?
joe5
Well I'd say its hard to suggest a price without pictures, but I think 3-4k is a bit optimistic, at least here in PNW. Yes they are more "popular" but that also means they are too hard to find either. The 2 door hatches are a bit rarer than the wagons but I agree with ron that FWD is gonna bring in less money than 4WD. IMO a safer price for a reasonable sell time would be between 1.5-2k, maybe more if its in truly stunning condition. Never hurts to shoot for more tho! If you don't mind, let us know what it ends up going for!
jdgmbi1
Understood. I would love to post the pics, but can't seem to be able to find anything on how to do that. I have them on my desktop, so the URL thing is above me. Well I'd say its hard to suggest a price without pictures, but I think 3-4k is a bit optimistic, at least here in PNW. l75eya
To post a picture first you need to upload the photos from your desktop to a photo sharing website, such as Photobucket. Once you have it uploaded there, you will be supplied with sharing links. The link you want is a direct link (it'll just be a URL, just like the web site URL www.ultimatesubaru.org but it will be a bit longer and end with .jpg) as that direct link is what you put in the URL here in your message. rdweninger
My last 2 hatchies I bought were an '83 for $500 and an '85 for $800. Both were in great shape and are 4wd.
l75eya
rdweninger, that's what we call good deals though I would think. That's somebody who just didn't really even know what they had and just wanted to get rid of the car quick, I would think. In the OPs case, I would imagine being the original owner, having all documentation, etc should account for something. Also, I don't think this is a hatch we're talking about. I think it's just a 2 door GL, which I believe are worth more than the hatches (just noticed Joe commented hatch above. I don't think this car is a hatch. Original poster confirm?)So if we average out the prices everybody is throwing around so far, we're getting a general idea of roughly a low of 1k and a high in the upper 2's. jdgmbi1
Thats a nice looking car. Will Dang! It worked. Than you. Yea, it is a very clean 30 year old car. The story on the history kind of explains why. It has the weirdness mixed with sentimental attachment.
l75eya
Yeah that's easily a 2k car. I stand with my 3-4 k initial range. I'd start at 4. You might get lucky. Id be happy with 3,200 for that car though.

Id be happy with 3,200 for that car though. Heck! I would be happy and amazed with anything over $2,500. Brand new, tax, license, out the door (as they say) it was $9,200. Not to mention it makes me feel about the money I have put into it so my son could drive it. Thanks a lot everyone. Really appreciate it, and I will report back on the winning number. joe5
wow that things sweet! I didn't even consider it was a sedan, I saw 2 door and assumed hatch so sorry for introducing some confusion. Yea shoot for more, I think the value in that would be how rare it is. I've never even seen a 2 door ea81 sedan. So good luck with the sale hopefully you get the higher numbers! l75eya
Honestly if you were able to hold on to it for a couple more years you will probably get more. These old Subarus are finally starting to climb in value. Slowly. EBay would be the way to go I would think. List it high and see what happens. jdgmbi1
When I bought it, the salesman told me that he had never seen one either and that they were just not desirable and were trying to get rid of it. I personally have never seen another. I was 22 at the time and thought the 2 door was cooler. So, you think Ebay would be the way to go. I have no experience on the selling end of Ebay, so are you saying set a High Reserve and see what happens, or a high Buy It Now? Thanks.
l75eya
I've never sold a car on ebay, but the reason I mention ebay is because your car will get a LOT of attention. A lot of people will see it. I would go on their website and read about all the associated fees, percentages, etc that they take out and gain a good understanding of that before you make a decision to list it. Also a google search of how to sell your car on ebay should probably net a lot of good resources to read into as well. There's a few options that I'm aware of, a plain jane auction with a reserve, an auction with no reserve, a buy it now only, and an option for people to "Make offer"s on your listing.Investigate and read thoroughly. That being said, like I said before, your car will get a lot of views on ebay though. Your keywords are important too, the more you use, the more searches your listing will turn up in.Good luck with the sale! How come you're selling it anyhow? Just tired of it? Don't drive much anymore?
jdgmbi1
Thank you, will do. Why am I selling it? Well, sometimes I wonder that same thing. I bought it new, drove it for two years, parents bought it and drove for about 7 years, then passed onto to my sister, who drove it for 5 years. It then sat in my Mom and Dads garage pretty much until I pulled it out, fixed the stuff that needed it, and my son has been driving it for about 2 years. It's become kind of a family heirloom, if you will ( . Biggest reason is, regardless of all the great memories I have of the car, the fact my whole family has had it and it was my son's first car, I just don't see any benefit to letting it sit around for another 15 years without driving it. As much nostalgia is attached to it, I guess it is time to be practical. I am sure i will end up regretting it as much as i do that my Dad sold my first car. Then again, it was a 69' Z-28 that he paid $1,800 for in the 80's...and I have a sneaking suspicion I would gotten his money back for him. Thanks again to everyone that has responded to my question, it has really helped, and I will follow up and let you know where it ends up.
