almost got it!

Recommended Posts

i was messing around with my 88 dl wagon today and got everything to light up. it sputtered and almost started i even got the little light on the ecm to work. then i went and bolted the two relays back up above the ecm and now the ign doesn't work  so i am thinking the square relay is the ign relay and the round one is the fuel pump relay and i think the ign relay is bad. how do i test it or bypass it temperarily? chiltons and haynes are not helping any.

hmmm my 85 MY mpfi turbo had two round 22A relays as found all over our years of subes and Mitsubishis too!

how many pins on relay of concern ? 4 ?

surely one has to be an earth for the coil of the relay.

Hook up a test light to power and touch each wire to that relay to see if just one earths out - treat it as #85 on an ordinary horn relay.

swap test light clip to a known earth such as the key in ignition switch, and probe with ignition on for a wire only to operate with IGN on - this should be the lightest of two with power on with IGN - likely your #86 contact. See if you can make these two wires click a good relay without any other wires added to relay. The fatter IGN power wire would then go to #30 and #87 could go out to power up say the coil ? another reasonable test point

the square one is definatly the ign one the round is the fuel pump relay. the square one has 6 terminals four for the output and two for the input, wheras the round one has  just four terminals. i have va spare ign relay from the wrecking yard and i got some life out of the ecm and heard the fuel pump kick in but smelled gas so i looked underneith  and gas was pouring out of the fuel pump and it wasn't the lines, can i buy a new one  like the original or do i have to go aftermarket?

  • 2 years later...

the 6 pins make kinduv a "U" pattern

the 2 pins at the ends of the "U" are the coil for the relay control.

the other 4 pins, 2 on one side are the 12v coming from fusible link box, and the other 2 are the out to ECU and engine.  so if you jumper across the 2 sides of the "U" you can bypass the relay.

it is a bad ground wire up under the dash. i found out from the lady i bought it from her 14 yr old son got mad when mom sold the car and grabbed the wires under the dash. then threw paint on the car. if i had tried that when i was a kid i wouldn't be sitting down yet. all she did was give him a time out and sent him to his room.

As for your original idea, I bypassed the main relay while swapping my ej22 and I had erratic spark, but she was almost starting.

Cheers for finding the problem, the relays themselves rarely fail.
