ghentr22
Hello, I just rebuilt 1998 subaru legacy outback dohc and am in process of adjusting valves. Does anyone know what the +/- limits are? Haynes doesn't mention. I have the bucket with shim type. I purchased wrong size shims and after all adjusting, I have 3 intakes that have clearance of .006. Do I need to get these closer to .008 with new shims? Also, half of my exhausts measure out at .009. Is this OK? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you. ocei77
Clearance on the intake is .0079+/- .0008. Exhaust .0098 +/- .0008 This is listed on the engine specs page Since it's hard to get the arrow at exactly the clock position mentioned, you may be ok on the intake. I'd do a full two revs and check again. O.
ghentr22
Thanks for the information. I will re-measure after start up. Now that it's all put together and under the hood, I suppose adjusting will be a bit more frustrating.
ocei77
It will. I removed the engine mount bolts on the driver side and left a few threads on the pass. side. Then jacked up the engine so I could get the valve cover off. You obviously have to remove the washer tank. Don't forget to clean and put sealant back on the corners of the valve cover on reinstall. ghentr22
Ok. Appreciate your help. I bought a pos micrometer when engine was apart and measured all the shims so I would know what to order after measuring valve clearances, ordered all the shims I needed, installed and half of the clearances were off because I had the wrong shim measurements to begin with. Very frustrating. I don't have the proper tool to compress the bucket to remove shim. How do I get shims out? Thanks
ocei77
Unfortunately, you have to remove the cam w/o that special tool. With all that entails. You may be able to do it in place with a cloth covered screwdriver, but I have never tried it. O.
