NV Zeno
'83 Dual range wagon: My rig makes the classic "CV axle going out" noise, under various conditions..that is, accelerating, coasting, straight line, whatever. It's worst when turning after stopping, but sometimes really bad just pulling into my driveway. The axle is a high quality rebuild, and I hear the same sound now as when the old axle was there. Wheel bearings are recent, under 20K ago (although I don't think it's that). My gut tells me, "transmission". I can explain why upon request. This is driving me crazy, I'd also like to have this repaired before leaving for WCSS. Whadya think?
GeneralDisorder
Sounds like you changed the wrong axle. GD

NV Zeno
Both axles are new. Sounds like a bearing somewhere in the driveline is really shot. Noise is worst/most coarse sounding after it's been sitting a few hours or overnight. Most apparent when a load is placed on the driveline, especially accelerating (no shaking or vibration in steering wheel), depressing the clutch pedal makes the noise stop. I know what shot wheel bearings sound like, this is not even close to that. Since depressing the clutch pedal makes it stop, I'm ruling out the throwout bearing. Is it possible that the pilot bearing is what's causing all the racket? Thanks
SubaSkeet
sounds an awful lot like a u-joint; noise while accelerating but not while in neutral. easy change on your ea81 wagon, since they actually come off the driveshaft. for ea82's you have to put in a whole new d-shaft. have you stuck it in 4wd? if not, i wouldnt recommend it until you get it changed out. 2 cents. cha-ching. the clickig-while-turning noise was definitely cv axle problems. Jibs
It's so cool that you're trying to keep that car on the road! How many miles do you have on it now? How about maybe just retireing it and getting a new one? I can't think of what it could be, I thought I'd just throw in my .02.
chef_tim
I'm with Skeet. Give the drive shaft a wiggle and see if there is play at the U-joints. I just changed out the drive shaft in Vickys car and I need to get some pictures. I thought it was only one of the joints but it turned out to be two and they were just shy of gernading. let us know what it is Dave. NV Zeno
Thanks guys, I'll see if my bud with lots-o-tools (and a lift) has a minute, so we can check the U-joints out. I hope it's as simple as that. Jibs: Retire it? It's only got 286,000 miles on it:lol:  , plenty of life left:rolleyes: .
