mcnea001
All: So the EJ22 has landed back in my 95 Legacy! Mating that transmission and engine is back up is more prayer and luck than science... I replaced the clutch and most all the seals and gaskets / sensors / filters. My question is how much should I button the engine back up before trying to start it? Should I just hook up electrical and clutch or the full deal? Hoping all goes well and there are no suprises. Any thoughts...lessons learned appreciated. Tom
Fairtax4me
Did you remove the oil pump and reseal that? If you did, the oil pump is dry and needs to be primed before you start the engine. Pull out all 4 spark plugs, unplug the fuel injectors and unplug the igniter module or ignition coil. Crank the engine for about 15 seconds until the oil pressure light turns off. Re-install the plugs, re-connect the injectors and the coil pack or igniter, then you can start the engine. Bare minimum, the whole intake system needs to be installed and connected. All the breather hoses and the large hose for the IAC valve. If those are not connected properly the engine will start and immediately shut off. It probably won't run long enough to know if its going to run totally smooth. With no coolant you'll only be able to run it for about 10 seconds, but that should be just long enough to know its going to start and run OK, so that's up to you if you want to put on the radiator hoses and fill it with coolant before starting. I did pull and reseal the oil pump. I filled the oil filter with oil when I put it on. I will pull the plugs as you advised. Is it obvious which connector goes to the fuel injectors? Should I leave the fuse in? I did replace the fuel filter and lines also. I will put everything back on the motor. I would rather get a clean start. Thanks for your help. DaveT
I have a socket adapter that I can put in a drill. Use it to spin the oil pump before installing the timing belt. Oil system primed.
Fairtax4me
Pump is driven by the crankshaft and can't be spun with a drill. Otherwise, that would be my preferred method. I do some toyotas with a drill. Is it obvious which connector goes to the fuel injectors?I just unplug the injectors themselves because the connectors are easy to get to. Little trick, push down on the connector then squeeze the lock tab and pull up.
