Hi.

It is my understanding that I can replace my 1997 legacy engine with a new model year, if so how far can I go in model years.?

If this is not the case to rebuild will be my only option; is it better to used original parts or after market ones.

Thank you

Hi,

What version of Legacy do you have? Or which engine do you have?

The '95-'98 EJ22 are interchangeable. The '95  requires a dual-port (2 port) header/exhaust manifold; all others are Single-port (google it).

The '96-'99 EJ25 are also interchangeable, but the '96 should be avoided due to a few inconsistencies w/the '97-'99 version.

You can also use the '90-'94 EJ22, but requires a little more work, but if you can rebuild an engine, it's not an issue.

The EJ22 and EJ25 are also interchangeable.....many people have swapped in the EJ22 for the EJ25 due to the head gasket issues.

You can NOT easily use an EJ22 from '99+ as Subaru changed the wiring/electronics - same for the '00+ EJ25.

No feedback on rebuilding.

GL,

Td

wt covered the common swaps and heres a few other options.

Almost all EJ series short blocks will mount to your heads. This means you can use a newer short block with your heads and intake.

You can also use EJ22 Heads on an EJ25 block giving other options as well.

The wiring issue he is referring to is primarily at the intake and the newer (99+) EJ22 and EJ25 sohc have different intakes and heads causing interchangeability problems.
