heavyarmsxx Posted October 21, 2015 Share Posted October 21, 2015 Hello all, kinda new to the forum posting but before I turn to the dealer I wanted to try here first. My current problem is that whenever low speed cornering or just low speed straight I get a type of binding what feels like the brakes are grabbing momentarily then releasing. I did try to search this problem out and I wanted to know if I'm right. If I put the fwd fuse in the problem goes away, I checked for codes using the handshake and got 25 and 31, could have just been stored when I was trying to start the vehicle on a near dead battery, I checked voltage at the tps and it is fluent as well as ohming it out, checked for shorts or burn marks on the tcm and it looks clear, drained and replaced trans filter and fluid, original owner stated that he thought that the rear passenger axle needed replacing but I lifted the vehicle in the air and turned the wheel and heard no noise, when I checked the transmission fluid it was black and smelled like gear oil so I'm guessing that the last time it was changed was back in nam, so far what I've come to the conclusion is that the transfer clutch pack is bad and needs replaced. The FWD fuse working tells you it's NOT electronic....>>>The Duty C solenoid IS working. I'd try a few more things. 1. Replace the ATF @ least 2+ more times>>Drain, Refill, Drive, Repeat....until it looks better than the tar you've got in there now. Whatever cheap ATF compatible you can find. 2. Find a gravel road or other loose surface and see if there's a delay in the back wheels engaging. 3. Reset the TCU codes - disconnect the battery for 30 minutes - and see what codes come back. #1 might help the TB to the point of being non-issue. #2 tells you the clutch packs are bad. Or connect the lines to a bucket, etc. and actually cycle ALL the fluid? Half or more is still in the TC when you just drain it. If just a drain, don't wait. Do the Drain>Refill>DRive>Repeat x2 now...and by Drive I mean just go thru each gear....I even done it by just cycling manually thru all the gears a few times while sitting in the garage between each drain and refill. And I DO NOT recommend an ATF Power or Chemical Flush on the 4EAT....I know there's debate on this....but depending on mileage and age of the car, they can do more harm than good by causing seals to leak. A '98 shouldn't have a filter - just a screen in the pan, which shouldn't require maintenance. '99+ Phase 2 trans had the spin-on external filter, which generally was for the 'life of the trans' but in your case may be worth changing...if applicable. heavyarmsxx Posted October 21, 2015 Author Share Posted October 21, 2015 (edited) I only drained, removed pan and mesh screen filter and replaced, figured since I was in there might as well, it does not have a spin on filter. Was going to go ahead and run at least 2 fresh runs of atf through it. I'm not using any type of additive or flusher. All 4 tires are the same size but 2 different makes, all have about the same wear but I'm going to be replacing them as soon as I can. And the PO did not replace anything that I'm aware of. Reality seems to indicate the system may not be quite as sensitive as they want you to guard against but, any tire (axle actually) turning faster than the others could be sensed as slippage and cause the AWD system to begin engaging. the fact that there are different tires on the car may also point to prior abuse of the system by mixing tires. I found a set of frs rims with 3 brand new blizzack tires and one hancook wintercept that is also new locally so I might pick up. The guy is asking 400 for the set. The PO said before he drove it, his sister owned it and only put fuel in it when needed. The PO also didn't have a clue about the vehicle other than a mechanic telling him it needed a fuel pump which it did, he was some kind of fashion designer who couldn't tell me why all of the relays were going off with the key in the on position, I later found out about the green test connectors. 1 Lucky Texan Posted October 21, 2015 Share Posted October 21, 2015 there's a way to measure the tires with some chalk and a run on some pavement, but maybe you can get a new tire to match the other 3 new ones you're picking up? some people have found a single, slightly worn tire on ebay or craigslist to match a partial set after a sidewall blow-out. Plus the tire size won't be correct....FRS/BRZ use a 215/45R-17....this is 1.6" too short (in diameter)....and FRS BRZ is a REAR-wheel drive so likely the wheel offset is wrong. Your '98 needs 205/70R-15 or 215/60R-16 tires. Anything else and your speedo will be off. And $400 for a set seems steep....not for a brand new set of tires, but for the wrong set of mismatched. Check CL for a set locally w/the above sizes. Put 'em on your existing wheels if needed as the existing tires are doing you no favors. I paid $150 for a nice set of mounted/studded snow tires and $85 for a decent set of summer tires for my car....good deals are out there. I did finish running transmission fluid through it 3 times now, the drain and refill method, problem is still there and I noticed something else. I drove up around and when I got back to park the forester it sat there for a second and then I heard a little thud around the middle of the vehicle and the vehicle rolled back and stopped. It wasn't the feel or sound of it not being in the notch for park, but then again I could be over thinking it. I do know I still need to get a set of tires to knock that area out. heavyarmsxx Posted October 23, 2015 Author Share Posted October 23, 2015 Gotcha, I did grab a hold of each cv axle and tried moving and rotating as well as the drive shaft and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, not to say something may still not be the problem just something I tried.
