Blower motor upgrade?

Recommended Posts

In wondering if there is a better blower motor that can be installed in my 84 wagon with either some or no modification that will fit behind the glove box. Mine just doesn't put out the air that I'm used to in my gmc safari and its starting to get colder and if it snows this year I plan on many trips to the mountain and want to keep the whole car toasty. I've already installed some insuslation in my car. I'm wondering if there are any other subaru models that have a better higher flowing motor or if anyone has swapped one from a different vehicle manufacturer.

Thanks for any help. If no one has done anything like this then I might try to find a feasible solution.

Hi,

I am in the exact boat as you are. I recently replaced the blower assembly with a second hand OEM blower in my 83' wagon to no avail and have checked the voltages across the blower motor/relay and resistor pack ect. I have concluded that it is just how they were back in the day.

I wonder if an aftermarket blower motor such as this, would give a higher output of air;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HVAC-Blower-Motor-4-Seasons-35398-fits-80-84-Subaru-DL-1-8L-H4-/151809519280?fits=Year%3A1983%7CMake%3ASubaru%7CModel%3ADL&hash=item23588d6eb0:g:BOoAAOSwT6pVrkvD&vxp=mtr

The hardest part is the blower motor is offset in the housing, so an adapter bracket will most likely be required to mount another blower motor. I have found that the early 2000 Subaru Foresters blower motors (w/o climate control) are fairly low profile and should work with a little modification.

Im interested in hearing what you come up with.

Regards,

Isaac

Jonas, Mine has no problem with the heating/cooling side, just very low air pressure through the vents. I have had the dash out and have checked all ducting/ heater core and evaporator.

I would be curious to know if your '84 wagon has good air pressure at the vent? does yours have an AC system fitted with an evaporator?

Regards,

Isaac

No A/C, good pressure. Heats the entire car and I very rarely run the fan on high. Maybe if I drive with the window partially down in the winter (truck driver habit) will I crank it up.

I'm gonna take a look at mine tomorrow as I "think" there is a vaccum operated air intake flap for the heater on the pass. side up under the dash. I suspect you may not be getting enough air, or, the lever that switches from A/C to DEF. and all in between is not controlling the flaps properly.

You could always pop the duct connected to the blower on the pass. side as it's easy to get to and see if you get more pressure that when it's connected.

My 87' has great airflow, no A/C just heat. Don't know what your blower sounds like, quiet and not blowing or loud and just not making it out of the vents. But I have seen a few Subarus over the years that have a bad fan switch on the dash. It doesn't seem to give the correct voltage to the blower. If you push on the switch knob and the blower speeds up, there's your problem. My 3rd position is currently that way 1, 2, 3 (trickle), 4 (Full power)

My ducting is fine as I checked it when I had evrything out of the dash. The blower motor is loud in high. Just doesn't have a lot of air flow no matter what vents it comes out of. The heat itself is great. Just not much airflow and since this winter in pnw is "supposed" to be really bad I want to make sure my car will warm up inside quickly when I crank the heat.

I've had some of these heaters cook you out and others just suck. Some have more air output than others from the resistors being old i guess. Just got the heater in my hatchback working and a new windshield. Eventually i'm probably going to put another one in another heater core.

Your problems is your blower motor resistors.
