Swapping front drivetrain.

Featured Replies

So, a question for the gurus/people who have done this before..

the situation:

have a brat that needs engine, trans, struts, axles etc

have a parts car that has all this...(as well as power steering...:))

is it easier(this being a relative term)

to leave all this attatched to each other and lift the car off the front drivetrain

or

pull the parts separately

i don't have a shop but i have equipment to do this (loader tractor or skidsteer)

did this with a buddies mini when i was in high school and can't remember if it was easier or not, i remember the 2 of us lifted the

front of the car up and off the engine.

anyone done this on a sube? or do i have to be the first.....

I've dropped the engine/trans/crossmembers as an assembly several times on Subarus. I usually take the suspension off, but if you can safely lift the car high enough, it would certainly be possible to leave it all together.

With a hoist, it would be crazy easy.

I guess it could work... check and recheck that everything will clear. Same with blocking / cribbing the engine and driveline and suspension parts. If your hydraulics hold steady. And you are skilled at find adjustments with the hoe position.

Considering that you've got something that can lift as well as manoeuvre:

I'd swap engine crossmember first as the front suspension bolts to it.

Then lift the car up and put the front wheels on ramps, logs, bricks, whatever to lift it up for clearance underneath.

Install the engine & trans together as a unit (without any crossmembers bolted on, and considering how the power steer bracket is bolted on, leave that attached.

fit the gearbox crossmember from underneath.

Yes leave it complete, unbolt from the body, raise the body up and rollout the whole front drive unit, it's a lot simpler and quicker, don't even unhook the y pipe

Works great especially if you have a boom truck right Scott lol

Thanks Scott, i figured you had done it before......

didn't think there would be any issue - looks like it would work

would use the front loader part  - have used the hoe and its not as easy to maneuver

will try to remember to take pictures....:)
