3Pin
I am stumped. I had a P0325 and a P0136 upon first read. Cleared the codes and still have a mil on based on my reader, but no codes. The check engine light on the dash is not illuminated. It might be a burned out or removed bulb by the previous owner. Anyone have any ideas? The engine is a 2.2 auto trans. Just replaced the trans. Car has about 135K on it. I tried to turn off the mil via a reader, didn't even restart the car and the mil is still on. Bad ground maybe?
1 Lucky Texan
the CEL should be tested before start - when the key is at ON and the other lights are tested. does it illuminate then? could be a prev owner disabled that light or it has burned-out. mikaleda
The CEL should come on for a short period when you turn the key to on position with engine off. If it doesn't then you have a burned out bulb or light was disabled by the p.o. somehow. Edited October 28, 2015 by mikaleda
wtdash
I'd go drive it. Maybe the 'mil' you see is the 'not ready' state that the ECU is in after the codes were cleared, which can only be reset by driving (search online for the parameters), from what I've read on here and elsewhere. Assuming this a recently bought 'project'? And the AT Temp light is NOT flashing, correct? That'd be an issue w/ the 'new' trans. GL, TD
3Pin
Thanks everybody for the replies. Codes were clear, but mil was on before new trans. I could tell the MIL was on via my OBII reader only. Drove it very little cuz trans was eating itself up as I drove. Got to the shop though. Put in new trans, 16 at flashes.....great. Swapped the duty c and clutch pack from orig trans and now it drives good and runs good. Drove it 20 miles today, but it has an exhaust leak from the trans work. Exhaust will get fixed tomorrow as well as some new front rotors & pads. After the exhaust repair, I will test it again and see it if the MIL on clears or is able to turn off. The bulb does not illuminate at start. Is it hard to replace the CEL bulb or put one in after the previous owner possibly took it out? PW
johnceggleston
swapping the bulb is pretty easy. you might could use another bulb in the instrument panel. which bulb are you willing to give up, ABS, SRS? SRS pops up WAY WAY less often. the knock sensor should be a non-issue., once replaced. what is the definition of the p0136 code? o2 sensor? 3Pin
the p0136 was an o2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2. neither has come back and I am up to about 50 miles now but still need to weld up the exhaust leak from the trans swap. It looks like 4 screws to replace a bulb behind the dashboard. Is that right? I saw a YouTube of a guy who removed the steering wheel to get at the dash. Is that necessary? Fairtax4me
Are you Checking MIL status with the engine running? Normally the MIL wil be On with key On engine off, and the scanner may display "MIL On" because of that. With Engine running, MIL status should be Off.
3Pin
I am not checking it with the engine running. I will. Thanks for the reply. I don't ever remember seeing the status mil on before like this though.
3Pin
Here is the answer, the POS PO took out several bulbs from the dash, ABS, check engine etc and sold it to an unsuspecting young girl who experienced all sorts of issues and sold it to me for damn near nothing. So the light was on due to a couple of minor issues that were easy to fix, but he ripped her off. I feel bad for her. When I put the bulbs back in, replaced the knock sensor the MIL on turned off. All is good now. Just for future reference, after resetting the check engine light, it should tun off the MIL via the reader as well.
Fairtax4me
Glad to hear its fixed. So bulb missing = MIL status On. Somewhere in the FSM there are diagnostics for the MIL lamp circuit.
3Pin
My bet is that if the bulb is removed, the mil will stay on.
