I've driven both. They both have their days. I actually like the cvt in the crosstrek. I've heard the 5spd is nutless. Nice hatch Zap.

I test drove both, after 2 1/2 years of driving the cvt, I love it.  Other peoples' opinions are irrelevant.  

 

 

The hatch will get cleaned up a bit and eventually be sold back to my buddy who I got it from.  If he doesn't want it, I'll sell it.  Either way, it will be parts for my Jeep after the winter passes and the weather warms up.

I find the throttle response really obnoxious on the CVT, it's super touchy and jumps off the line and there's no sport mode. Which means if you're hooning around it "upshifts" all the way when you let off, then takes forever to "downshift" again when you want power.

 

I suppose the gas pedal thingy annoys me more that I drive a diesel (not subaru) now and kind have to mash it...
