Pillar trim fly away

Recommended Posts

My poor Soobie is falling apart, it seems.  I was driving to work today and I noticed out of the corner of my eye, this flash of black flying off my car.  I circled around to find it was the trim piece that covers the pillar between the windshield and door!  Wow.......that had never happened before, but by the time I circled around to get it, someone had run over it, so it had this bend in it.  I did pick it up and take it with, but not sure how to get it back on (assuming I can carefully get it molded back into shape (not TOO terribly bent).  Judging by the fittings, it looks like it was attached from inside somehow, so not quite sure how this can be re-attached, or if I should just find some thick rubber washers, position it in place and epoxy it in or something.

I know parts like this are hard to come by, so any thoughts or recommendations are always welcome.  Thanks!

Looking at your photo maybe you're psychic, ......but I'm not.   We could use year, make, model, and maybe a photo of the piece you have/need for your Subaru.  Good luck and I hope you get it replaced or straightened out.  Cheers

I only hope I can get it bent back into shape, or if someone has a spare, that would be awesome too!  I just don't know how these attached, but from the looks of the surroundings, it was pretty much adhesived into place with something good and stong.

Thanks!

  • 2 weeks later...

one time the black piece of trim that runs from the front of the windshield back to the rear door on the top sides of the car came loose going down the highway. The rear side came off but the front stayed on. So going down the highway all of a sudden...WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP haha it was super startling but luckly not a big deal just ripped it off and kept driving.

I had a piece of the rear triangle trim around the fixed glass on the back of a sedan broken at the bottom so it would whap-whap-whap in the wind on the highway. I taped it a few times but eventually the tape would wear off. One of the times after it'd worn off, I was on the highway and that piece of trim just let go, heard it snap right off, saw it bouncing away in the mirror. Windy day that was.

On the plus side, the windshield wont leak without that piece. On the down side those are getting hard to find.

If you can get it close to its original shape, you can put it back on easily. You see the plastic clips? Tighen the screws in them about a half turn each, then put some 3m trim tape on the raised part of the body. Pop the part back on and push it down onto the tape.

While you're looking for parts c'mon over to www.subaruxt.com A good bunch of folks over there.

By the way i've owned 5 XT's over the years.

One of the guys I work with seems to think he might know where to find another trim piece if this one is beyond hope (gonna try and be gentle to bend it back in), so we'll see how this goes.  At least the windshield doesn't leak without it, so I'm happy there.  Just little trim pieces here and there getting brittle after almost 30 years and starting to crumble, but this one was a bit of a surprise.  I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.
