2005 Legacy driver's power window not working

Recommended Posts

The driver's power window switch worked intermittently (or not at all). The door lock switch, the window lock-out switch, and the other three window switches worked fine. I replaced the switch (not as easy as the internet led me to believe). Exact same problem - driver's window switch does not open/close the window - all other switches working fine. Note that the old switch would occasionally (it seemed like "whenever it wanted") open or close the window - sometimes seconds or minutes after the switch had been pressed/pulled. I assume it's not the motor and have read about "the window regulator" in some forums.

Anyone have any ideas on how to proceed? Already blew $130 or so on a new switch, really don't want to keep replacing working parts. How do I test to see the exact problem?

thanks for your response.

artymac,

Assuming the new switch is good, etc., get the door panel off and check/clean the wiring connector to the window motor. Power the window motor to a separate 12 volt power supply (2 long wires off the car battery if necessary) to see if it works.  The top two wires of the connector on the motor are the ones to use. Reversing those wires to the same pins will power the window in the other direction.

If the motor is bad, you found your problem. If its good, then you have a problem in the wiring to the switch or from the switch to the battery side.

The procedure is

1. Check the fuse.
2. Check the power window main switch.
3. Check the power window sub-switch.
4. Check the power window motor.
5. Check the wiring harness.

Good Luck!
