tennsubaru
Hi, I'm new here so sorry if this has been discussed before but I haven't seen too much on it. The question is how do I get the best mileage out of my 91 loyale? I just got it and it gets about 25mpg. I know that decent but I'd say it should be better considering it's such a light car with a 1.8L that only puts out 90HP. I've read that disconnecting the power steering at give +2 mpg? The check engine light does come on but it's giving code 34 which is the EGR solenoid. The way I understand it that should only effect idle performance? Are performance chips like the one in the link below just a joke? http://www.gainmpg.com/performance-chip-for-subaru-loyale Thanks, Bobby
naru
Fix the EGR. http://www.tuneruniversity.com/blog/2012/05/dont-block-or-remove-the-egr-valve-its-saving-you-money/
idosubaru
yes, a joke. good tune up/running condition: O2 sensor if it's original, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter ditch the clutch fan if it has one yes removing power steering/a/c could help a little bit city driving and mountainous driving will kill MPG. eastern TN mountains verses flat western TN could give very different results. Loyale 2.7 Turbo
...Are performance chips like the one in the link below just a joke? http://www.gainmpg.com/performance-chip-for-subaru-loyale ... Yes, almost all performance Chips are a Swindle, except very Few that are intended for Real High Performance Cars, so forget about such a thing for your Subie. Keeping the tires at the maximum inflation pressure, according to what says on their sidewalls, a clean air filter and clean Sparkplugs at the proper Gap, will help a little to gain extra mileage from a full tank; but also your driving behaviour makes a Difference, if you keep the gas pedal floored, will use more gas, than gently pressing it... you know. Kind Regards.
tennsubaru
Thanks for the replies! I will definitely try and figure out the EGR problem before I do anything else. Could an old or dirty O2 sensor affect performance even if it's not setting off a trouble code?
l75eya
If your car is an automatic, don't expect much more than 25mpg avg. Just saying.
DaveT
Don't know for sure about fuel mileage, but the O2 sensor can fail in ways that don't throw a code and burn out the catalytic converter. I suspect it could though. I've always gotten around 20-22mpg with my 3AT wagons. But I use the gas pedal.
Dee2
New O2 sensor and sharpen/regap your spark plugs. Those two things added about 4 mpg to my loyale. Beyond that, all the usual tuneup/careful driving items mentioned above. I'm now getting 26-28 mpg. Edited December 2, 2015 by Dee2
