angerthis
I have an 86 RX 4door it has the 3.7 gears in it the transmission went out in my car I picked up a parts car it was a loyal with a ej22 swop the rear diff is a LSD the car has rear disk braks and it did NOT have the push buttin 4WD it has 4WD low as well so I am assuming the transmission is the 3.7 but I just noticed that the axle stubs are not the same they are the smaller ones did they make a 3.7 trans with the small stubs? skishop69
If it wasn't a turbo, it's a 3.9. I don't recall ever running across small stub 3.7's but I'm not 100% sure they didn't make one. Like, 95% sure. lol
idosubaru
are you positive they're smaller or they just appear smaller? pic? all EA82 rear axles are interchangeable so they have to be the same stubs don't they?
l75eya
Many push button 4wd loyales were non lsd 3.7 23 spline. They are pretty common. The hard to find 3.7 is the one I have in the garage. Early rx 3.7 part time. You can run that 3.7 trans and just use the non turbo axles.
l75eya
Oh OK I just reread your post. If it has the 3.7 lsd rear, it's probably out of something else. Now, if you're saying it has a dual range trans in it, but with smaller 23 spline axles, I would suspect it's a 3.9 ratio trans. They didn't make any 3.7 dual range with 23 spline, only 25. This means it's either the dime a dozen 3.9 dual range, or somebody opened it up and swapped the 23 spline stubs into a 3.7. To know for sure without ripping it all apart, raise all 4 wheels of the ground, put it in lo, 1st gear, mark all 4 tires at the same spot with chalk or something, and let it roll. You can also just turn a wheel by hand if it's not running. The wheels should all turn at the same speed. If the rear rotates faster than the front, then you have a 3.7 rear mated to a 3.9 trans. turbosubarubrat
You have a 3.9 d/r unless somebody split the case and swapped stubs on a 3.7 d/r. Check your gears in the rear diff to make sure it wasn't converted over to a 3.9 lsd. I have a 3.7 d/r out of a 85 gl-10/rx that would i sell or trade if it is a 3.9 d/r. Numbchux
Well....considering it's had an engine swap, the probably a rear diff swap.....who knows. There should be a transmission code on the bellhousing near the starter, google that and you'll have a good idea.
angerthis
Ya thanks all I just got the transmission back in my car I'll go do the tire mark trick hear in a bit. This is what I have found out OK my stock 3.7 transmission no good so I put a 3.9 in it was planning on taking my 3.7 LSD and swapping it to a 3.9 but have not so I have been running around in 4wd Hi and no frunt axles the gear ratio sucked not a good set up guttlis from 1 to 2 gear. So last night I put that other transmission in did not put front axles in just to see how the car would acted in my opinion it was not guttlis like the other transmission so I don't no well see I just mite end up throwing the rear differential in my car don't want to go to 3.9 but just mite have to
l75eya
You can put front axles in. Just drive in fwd. You can even use 4wd in snow, won't harm anything, matter of fact will make it easier to go slideways. I drove with 3.7 trans and 3.9 rear for long time. Scott in Bellingham
the rear diff may be a 3.9 with the 3.7 cover
