About to drive Over My Subaru with a Dump Truck

For the last 6 months I have been trying to get this vehicle running i have tried everything and running out of ideas.... and money.

 

The vehicle is a 5 speed manual 1990 Subaru Loyale with an ej22 swapped
into it out of a 5 speed manual 1992 Subaru Legacy.


 

4 out of 5 days of
the week it drives normally but runs rich (I get about 16 mpg), sometimes it
will surge idle/stall
(also did this in the legacy), throttle wont responds unless pumped, will sometimes high idle like its cold even if it isn’t, Will have extreme hesitation/sputtering.


 

I have replaced;


 

 Throttle position
sensor


 

Oxygen sensor


 

Coolant temp sensor


 

Spark plugs and wires-all spark plugs are dark black but dry.
I just checked them today.


 

Coil pack


 

Cleaned idle air control valve


 

Had fuel injectors rebuilt


 

New alternator


 

New timing belt and water pump


 

New intake manifold gaskets


 

Valve cover gaskets


 

Fuel filter


 

Swapped out computer for a different one


 

Checked for vacuum leaks couldn’t find any


 

Had electrical expert/ Subaru mechanic check that all the
electrical was functioning properly


 

Checked compression- all 4 cylinders were at 180 PSI- also
checked today


 

Cleaned the MAF sensor


 

The exhaust sometimes is black sometimes is blue but is
almost always white, even when warm.


 

The catalytic converter has been gutted out


 

Check engine light codes read 31 and 33 which is throttle
position sensor and vehicle speed sensor.


 

When I put in the new throttle position sensor today it ran
much worse than usual to the point of not being able to drive.

Well, first off you can ruin a MAF by cleaning it if the ignition is on. A MAF that is skewed will not set a code and will cause all kinds of issues. Second, are you sure the TPS circuits were spliced correctly and are good? Did you ohm them end to end? Should be less than 1 ohm.

There - it's clear as day - a huge flashing NEON billboard sign is telling you it has TPS related issues.  

 

The code is not for "the throttle position sensor" but rather "The Throttle Position Sensor ***Circuit***". 

One of the wires from the TPS to the ECU is compromised.  Test resistance of each wire from the TPS to the ECU.

 

Knock sensor is the most common EJ sensor to fail by a looong shot, might as well replace that too.

is the VSS connected up to the speedo head at the back ? Some EA82 according to legend had a VSS output. Every EA82 speedo head I pulled out had one. I never tested it for output

 

surge, stall and high idle - without your foot intervening on the loud pedal ?

 

a high idle speed is going to be by maybe an air leak in a duct between afm and throttle body, which can muck up randomly OR the higher idle speed is air leaking via one of the throttle body bypass worm holes controlled by an ECU controlled solenoid. You could try pull the TB and study it closely for any possible air bleed circuits bypass the throttle plate, tap into any solenoid control wires to see what they do and when ... I like how the problem transitioned from the donor to recipient and you told us
