I'm looking for a good used manual trans for my 2000 Legacy,  what's the newest year that is plug-n-play?  If you're curious about the problem, details can be found here,

1999-2004 should be direct. Up to 2006 or even later may work. From a legacy, or if your at the U pull grab an outback trans of same year range. Then grab the rear diff too. You will like the lower gears. You could go for a forester trans and diff in that case too. There the same

Right, forgot about the gear ratio thing.  This is just a daily driver, so not too concerned with performance.  What about Impreza stuff from the same year range? I remember it all have the same bolt/pin pattern, but it's been awhile, more reading must be done.  Thanks for the info

Yea, same year range. Just match the gear ratios.

You can use any earlier trans (90-98). If you get one from a car with a cable clutch you just have to move the pivot stud for the release lever and you'll only use 4 bellhousing bolts instead of 8.

 

May need to swap your Nuetral and reverse switches and the bracket for the exhaust hanger.
