1999-2004 should be direct. Up to 2006 or even later may work. From a legacy, or if your at the U pull grab an outback trans of same year range. Then grab the rear diff too. You will like the lower gears. You could go for a forester trans and diff in that case too. There the same

Right, forgot about the gear ratio thing.  This is just a daily driver, so not too concerned with performance.  What about Impreza stuff from the same year range? I remember it all have the same bolt/pin pattern, but it's been awhile, more reading must be done.  Thanks for the info

You can use any earlier trans (90-98). If you get one from a car with a cable clutch you just have to move the pivot stud for the release lever and you'll only use 4 bellhousing bolts instead of 8.

 

May need to swap your Nuetral and reverse switches and the bracket for the exhaust hanger.
