4eat filter conversion ? (from filter on the side to H6 style with a plug) ?

Recommended Posts

I'm the owner of an Outback 2001 H6 with a defective transmission

I bought on Ebay from a JDM shop in NYC a JDM Lancaster H6 transmission

I'm in Canada in Montreal I had the transmission shipped to a warehouse in USA next to the border where we picked it up

once back in Montreal, after paying importation duties and sale taxes, I found out that the transmission is not the right one

The shop sent me a JDM WRX NB 4eat

I was not happy and i'm dealing with the shop for that

both transmission are 4.11 final and VTD

the WRX one has the Sport Shift valve body the Lancaster probably has the same valve body as mine

I know the transmission will bolt to my engine and my car

my main concern is the filter, mine beeing an H6 it has a remote filter and somekind of plug on the side of the transmission like on the attached pictures

now the question for which I can't find an answer is

Can I removed this plug and use it on the WRX transmission to replace the filter or not ?

returning the transmission will be a major PITA and the shop offered me a full refund if the transmission could be use as is

Just as a hunch I would say yes, you can use the block off plate/plug from the old trans on the new trans. I believe on the H6 the only reason the filter is not on the side of the trans is clearance to the exhaust or some other component. The plug/plate I am guessing from looking at it just takes the place of the filter. That bolt is probably a big banjo bolt. So it's still allowing the flow to go through like normal, like if there were a filter there (it's not blocking off the flow). So then the filter can simply be in line with the trans cooler hoses like on the remotely mounted set up. I don't know though how that plug/plate mounts, i.e. there's probably either a gasket or o-ring behind it or possibly some kind of sealant.

after reading your message and reading a service manual found online you are right it's a plate with Oring on the back and a banjo

and you are right also about the H6 the catalytic converter is right there

my last concern is the C solenoid for locking the center diff , does it work like a 2000-2003 outback or in reverse like the 2004 and up but this I could easily fix with a small electronic circuit

Much better off swapping the transfer solenoid, valve, and valve plate from your old trans than trying to deal with it electronically.

The signal is a lot different than just the inverted version of the older signal- the electronic inversion box kinda worked, enough to get me through the winter, but didn't really work well.
