lesliemw
Trying to replace my front passenger side CV axle. The old one broke while removing, and there is a piece remaining on the end that goes into the motor - I can't figure how to get it out. I have the new one, and I can see it is held in place with a c-clip (I think that's what it's called....it's a thing c-shaped ring that fits into a groove on the end of the axle. I've tried using a pry bar on the top to force it out, but no luck. Any advice or tricks on how to remove the remaining piece of the old axle? Pictures show view from the level of the wheel looking in, and then from top down through the hood.
Fairtax4me
You really need to be under the car to do it. Use a large pry-bar between the transmission and the axle cup and pry it out. It helps to apply pressure to the cup then pop the prybar near the cup with a hammer.
idosubaru
+1, pry directly out, away from the transmission, not at an angle. it should come out relatively easy once it gets proper pressure. they pop out by hand easily when the full axle is attached, there's just so little to work with when it's just the cup. what prompted this job - noises, vibrations, busted boots, wreck? lesliemw
Thank you very much for your reply, I ended up getting it out with somepersistence with the pry bar and a hammer as you suggested. Your reply told me I wasn'tnecessarily doing anything wrong....just needed to try some additionalways of applying force. Now got the new one in -n that was kind ofdifficult to fit in also, but I managed. The repair was prompted by substantial vibration. A friend took a look and told me it was my CV axle breaking. Vibrations are gone now, so this appears to have fixed the problem. I really appreciate your help, this is actually the first repair I've done myself and am amazed I got it done! Yay Google and on-line forums!
