Got a bad tranny in my '94 SVX.  Got another, said to be good.  How do I find the final drive ratio of a 4EAT sitting in the bed of a pickup truck?  Also, I need to move the torque convertor from the old tranny to the new, am told there is a bit of a trick to seating  the thing.  Anybody know the trick?

look for identifying tag or ask who is selling - they should know at the very least if they've ever seen an SVX - it's nothing like any other Subaru.  SVX is the only 3.54 final drive like John said so if it's anything else it won't work.

though technically you could swap your front diff onto an EJ transmission probably but front diff work is no joke.

you can alternately pull the drain plug and paint one of the gear teeth through the drain plug.  then turn/count rotations and do the math and see if you get 3.54 or not.

Yes. Depending on which interpretation of "3.54" Subaru went with, the ring gear will have to have either 39 or 46 teeth. Good to hear that it's visible thru the drain hole, and thanks for the tip..

or just swap the rear diff. Really not that bad.

Also, SVX and Turbo Legacy had an extra plate in the clutches for a bit of extra strength. Any other 4EAT will not be quite as strong.

There should be tag on top of the bell housing of the transmission. Subaru Autos typically start w/TZ... you can then just Google that # for applications.

- Make sure it's an AWD, if yours is also, as they did make 2WD SVX's

- Assuming you know the SVX is infamous for its 4EAT failures - usually due to heat....

- ...Install an ATF cooler, ASAP.

And the trick to seating the TC is covered on here...please Search for that important info.

just make sure you don't "push" the torque converter into place with the flexplate.  they should never touch until you draw the together with the torque converter to flexplate bolts.

using that concept - you can simpy measure the distance from the flexplate to engine bellhousing and torque converter to trans bellhousing to make sure you have clearance and they won't touch before trying to wiggle the lump into the car.
