1 Lucky Texan
what's wrong with the diff now?
wtdash
Go to opposedforces.com and drill down to your year/model and look under Train>>Differntial (trans) for some info. XS is 4.44 FD ratio and should be the same for '03-'08...but the site shows a different p/n for the '03-'04 model. The XS And use car-parts.com for interchange. The '04-'05 5-speeds used a 4.44 too, IIRC. The OB XT had a 4.44, too...not 100% sure on the years. The XS and XT models have rear axle limited slip differential...not on the X. michaelr
The problem is the LSD clutches are grabbing. I feel the LSD in the diff is going bad. Ring and pinion are OK.
desertsubaru
the Diff oil and add a friction modifier and see if that helps.
Fairtax4me
Subaru uses a fluid type LSD. No clutches. Friction modifiers do no good. What symptoms are you having? Is it jerking and lurching in turns after it warms up? How many miles on the car? Edited March 26, 2016 by Fairtax4me
michaelr
It is jerking in both turns and straight, cold and warmed up. Under acceleration straight you can feel it trying to catch? 155,000 m,iles.
michaelr
By the way, appreciate the input.
Fairtax4me
Sounds more like the center diff in the trans. Rear diffs on these rarely go bad, and when the limited slip fails it tends to fail open so it just acts like a regular diff. A ring gear problem is possible, and that should cause a bunch of metal in the fluid. Center diff failure is more common and the center diff often fails to a locked position. Again, no clutches, just a slightly different design than the limited slip unit in the rear diff. Mismatched tire sizes, or greatly worn tires on one axle or one side vs new tires on the other side will cause damage to the center diff. Do all 4 tires match in brand, model, size, and tread depth?
michaelr
Yes they do ,have tried to keep all the same size.what is involved with the repairing or replacing the center diff? It really sounds like the noise? is coming from the rear.
Fairtax4me
Have you checked the fluid in the rear diff? Could also be a rear axle. Are any of the rear axle boots ripped? Have you checked the rear u-joint on the driveshaft for play?
1 Lucky Texan
have you tried the FWD fuse?
michaelr
speaking of the FWD fuse, my manual does not show one nor can i find it under the hood. Is there an alternate way to disable the rear AWD to check the system
1 Lucky Texan
on yours, not sure - the info should be in the manual near the section on using the 'donut' spare tire. you should be able to find a spare fuse, inside the cover of the under-hood fuse box in front to the left (US driver's) side strut tower. Any fuse will work - and it can be used as a normal spare afterwards. The slot to put it in is either in that same fuse box or, on newer cars, it may be a slot in the cabin fuse panel near your left knee.
wtdash
FWD fuse location is shown on page 12-8 - under Specifications. site for downloads: https://carmanuals2.com/brand/subaru Edited March 29, 2016 by wtdash

michaelr
Well my forester has a full size spare and there is nothing in the owners manual about disabling the rear drive.
