Thinking about it

Recommended Posts

I am new to Subarus and I have a '00 OBS. but i am looking into getting an older sube to trick into a off road rig. I have a lot of history with jeeps. I just sold my last one though, and insted of spending $25,000 building another one, maybe ill try a sube.

Im just in the reserch stage rite now so I would like to hear some opinions on what to use and how far to go. I do want it to be street legal!! barely :brow:

SO what is a good platform that i wont have to mod the body to much to keep with my pervious statement?

And i am sort of a HP nut so i like a strong motor to begin with.

and what mods are 100% needed and what can i put off?

oh and one last thing CHEAP!!!!!!!! :grin:

Better word 'Search'

There are so many offroad soobs on this forum you cant go 2 feet without tripping over one. Look around the site. Do your research. If you spent $25k on a jeep, then you know whats needed for offroad and what can be put off.

Your certainly in the right place. You can't get a more affordable starting platform with a strong supply of spare (junkers) for parts. An off-road Jeep is not unique, an off-road Subaru will turn heads!:slobber:

WORD....

People were looking all confused when I showed up at the off-road play ground in my BRAT. :D

First question that you should ask is what do you want (Hatch, sedan, Wagon, BRAT) Once you have that down, you need to see what's available in your area. And how far you are willing to drive to get it. Too bad you are not on the West Coast or Cali, I could help you get a BRAT.

re: HP, Older Soobs are pretty anemic. They lack a lot of HP. An EA82T is rated at 119 Hp or so stock Downright wimpy compared to some of the other off-road rigs out there. But then it weighs less than 3000 pounds.

The key to making a off-road Soob is imagination and creativity. If it looks like it can work, make it work. If it looks like it won't work, take a big hammer to it and make it work.

Lot's of support here. Lurk around and see what catches your eye.

BTW how close are you to Paragon Park? Will be there this winter for x-mas w/my family.

Ive never heard of Paragon Park. but that doesnt mean im not close to it, or havnt been there. give me a little detail and I will see.

Thanks for the advice. As for the $25K for a jeep that is just small change compared to what can be done with one. and as you know once you have a hot rig you just cant spend fast enough to get it even better. I think with a sube I could control it since it would be the only one like it. its true Jeep rigs are a dima a dozen.

I dont reall know what these EAs and EJs are yet but im learning. but from what i hear an early 80s with 4x4 will work. i like the brat for looks but it seems hard to come by. i think i will go waggon.

Subaru = $1200

Lift = $375

Tires/rims = $500

cant get much cheaper than that. That is pretty much all you need.

If you want to go extreme, then you'd want to start looking into larger lifts, larger tires. If you want lower gears find yourself a divorced t-case, and a welder... start fabricating some stuff and there you have it.

Now how do people feel about turbo on a rig. To me i think it would be useless unless youre doing baja. Super chargers work great to help on jeeps, but they are expensive and I doubt you could get one for a sube.

Wouldnt just a good carb and exaust be the best bet if you are into low speed stuff? When did subaru first start putting Injection in?

turbo is a no no, gives you power in the higher gears, when you want it in the lower. a weber carb should be fine

MPFI started in '83 with the EA81T. Thats the only FI EA81, and of course the turbo model. Your right, turbo is almost useless for off-roading unless you have it tuned to produce max torque/hp at very low rev's... or if your gearing was low enough, you could harness power in the upper rev's. Regardless, your best bet is a well tuned carb and a good exhaust. Look into the Weber DGEV 32/36 as the best replacement, should cost $300 for a whole kit (carb, adapter plate, instructions).

  • 2 years later...

fuel injection rules for steep angles.One problem with my 87 GL wagon is it would die on steep angles(carb) now on the other hand I have a powerfull FI motor to put in....

similar to a 4.0L jeep swaped to a 350 chevy TBI.Except less power...
