Anyone ever recut a key? Cut an old key be cut to a different cut

Recommended Posts

The original XT6 keys are unique and have a built in light. Some people like them but they're obviously old and unavailable last I checked.

I have a few used ones so why not gamble and have them cut to a different car and see what happens. I've got nothing to loose.

Multiple times I've had warn keys work in two different XT6's. And sometimes I've had a key work in just the ignition or just the doors or start the car and could be pulled out while driving. seems like the lock cylinders are somewhat forgiving.

Anyone ever try it?

Theoretically could be done if the key your cutting has more material left than the one copying. I have considered it and looked at a couple, and it wasn't possible in those cases.

There are 2 keys with a light in them. They are functionally interchangeable, although the exact design of the battery tray changed, and the logo changed.

The older one (with the older-style logo) has been discontinued for some time.

57430AA130 is the newer style one, and has not been discontinued, I bought a brand new one last fall, and have been using it on my XT6 all winter. It is backordered right now (Estimated available of 4/11), and MSRP of $21.97

In some rigs i take the lock cylinder apart and take out the tumblers besides the one that holds it together so any key or screw driver will work in it. If you do that i would make a anti theft measure like a switch for your starter or fuel pump so it wont run.

There is also these keys on ebay that look close to the old ea82 keys http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Genuine-OEM-Subaru-LIGHTED-Master-Key-Blank-Impreza-Legacy-RS-GT-SVX-RX-/201206144031?fits=Model%3AGL-10&hash=item2ed8d21c1f:g:cNsAAOSwF1dUUZ2B&vxp=mtr
