WRX41
Hey all, I have a 2009 Impretzel OBS and wanted to start using FreeSSM for diagnostics and such. The million dollar question is which cable do I use?http://www.amazon.com/VIMVIP-VAG-COM-409-1-Scanner-Volkswagen/dp/B00K6498D0/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1453058538&sr=1-1&keywords=vag-com Will this work?? Or do I need something different since my car has a CAN bus I believe. Any and all help is appreciated!
wtdash
Hi, That cable specifically states it may NOT work w/CAN bus cars, so wouldn't count on it. Keep looking...and do a search on RS25.com and NASiOC.com as they are Impreza-specifc sites...although all Subarus went to CAN bus about the same time. Look up Tactrix cables, too. rverdoold
I have a simple K-line or kkl line vag-com cable. Which has a USB connection (though being cheap it still has an official FTDI usb to serial chip). It worked on my 99 impreza and on my 2009 (CAN) OBW using FreeSSM. I think the CAN bus cars still use the SSM for their own protocol. I think the sampling interval on the SSM channel is higher than on a CAN bus, though CAN bus can have a higher through bitrate. So honestly any VAG-com kkl-line or k-line cable should work.

rverdoold
KKL works with CAN bus cars? https://www.amazon.ca/Findway-VAG-COM-Interface-diagnostic-Volkswagen/dp/B00871CJ1W In mine 2009 EURO OBW it does, I can use FreeSSM and ECUedit and Romraider with the KKL line cable from deal extreme. (the same for my non-CAN, non-OBD2 1999 euro impreza.
