New guy - on the search of a unicorn subaru

Recommended Posts

HI everyone-

Just joined the forums, I have been looking around for buying a subaru for the past month

got to drive a legacy 06, 09 an 09 impreza and a 09 outback. and have been really pleased overall

so i'm probably going to get one! but i have zero experience with them.

so in part this is meet and greet and part what would some current/previous owners recommend sort of thing.

I'll hear anyone out but heres what i have for information so far- if this is not the place to post i will retract or otherwise. I really dont

have anyone to talk about this type of material.

I am looking pretty much everywhere for a subaru legacy or impreza between the years that i have happened to actually try out-

so 06 - 09 on the subaru legacy or the subaru impreza (hatchback). Although getting a wrx would be awesome its more pipedream atm  :)

i am willing to put 10k right now towards the car any more isn't gonna work.

Any input from the sages is appreciated.

i didn't see any questions at all, i'm not even sure what you're asking.

autotrader, craigslist, used car lots, ebay, lots of places to buy cars, just start searching.

here's the best advice - buy one from down south (or out west but prices are really high out there and probably further away).  fly down, and drive it back so you don't have any rust issues for awhile.

I've also been watching for an '06 to '09 Legacy here in Idaho or closeby. They come and go regularly. It seems like the minute one hits a used car lot, somebody buys it haha. I've had my eye on a couple that are still around though. I'm not sure how far you're willing to go to get one, but I'd say it's worth a decent trip if that's what you have your mind set on.

Yes in retrospect that post could have been put together better- but hopefully its enough to start some sort of dialogue on a newbie subaru owner.

I just started getting into subarus and cars in general- this will be my first vehicle. If there was some things I value most would be for instance how people felt about their cars in terms of maintenance costs? A more "long game' question would be could I sell the car if it wasn't for me like 3 years down the road even if i get like an older 06-07 model. Most of the people i am around are jeep enthusiasts but its not really the type of car that i'm into.

As far as the car goes- it looks like with a 10k hard ceiling my options might be limited. low miles and expecting anything past an 07 is miraculous. I wanted to get an impreza hatch or a legacy to share between myself and the gf for work and other purposes.

Hmm.  You are on the wrong side of the country.  Look into having one shipped to you.  You probably can and still stay under your 10k budget.

Within 50 miles of me.  :P

now could be i've been going about it all wrong- but wouldnt it be beneficial to avoid getting a post 100k mile car for someone who doesnt know much about them or- the maintenance costs involved with a car of that type? I know i'd have to look at the carfax/autocheck to see if anything bad happened but i look at like an average of like 80-100 listings a day.

New F.N.G. here. I been in sales for the past two decades selling car audio systems. My career has taken a turn and now work for a Subaru dealer.  I am not your typical car salesman and honestly these cars sell themselves! Anywho I am near Portland Oregon and have plenty of inventory if any are interested. Thanks for reading....(now off to find a profile pic)

  • 2 weeks later...

I have an '07 Forrester that I bought new. I have been happy with the car but not necessarily with the Edmonton dealer. I recently checked on used prices just for fun. What I have is listed in Edmonton for around $14K - BUT that is in Canadian dollars. With the exchange rate being what it is, and with a little bargaining, it just might be within your budget. I have about 177k kilometers [110K miles] on mine and have had very few problems with it - my recent post not included.

And you are correct about them not lasting long when the For Sale sign is on. I have a friend who sells Fords in a small town in Alberta and he says that on those rare occasions when one does hit the market, it never lasts more than a day or two on the lot. They are very much sought after as used vehicles.

So after a couple of bad leads, I have found a 2010 impreza outback sport and a 2010 impreza hatch premium  with 98k miles on it each going for 9500. I'm gonna give it a lookover with a mechanic friend and i hope it goes well.
