mheckler
98 Forester (248,000 m) is leaking oil profusely. Someone looked under car in parking lot and said it was Front Timing Cover Leak, the seals behind it and the oil filter o-ring. DOES THIS SOUND RIGHT? How much should this cost? I also need the 250,000 maintenance done. Car has had oil change every 3,000 miles and all mileage maintenance's performed to date. THANK YOU!!! forester2002s
"Leaking profusely"? I would first check the oil filter. Is it screwed on tight? Is it leaking through the seal? If it's not the filter, then I would suspect the crankshaft seal. These tend to leak oil, which then drips out at the bottom of the timing-belt cover. Could also be the oil-pressure sending unit, located on top of the block.
fgf
Camshaft seals can leak substantial amounts of oil into the timing belt area - my 98 2.5L Outback blew one. If SOHC there are also O-rings sealing the "camshaft supports" to the head - maybe 1/16" thick X 2" OD - which can make slow leaks.
