Broken Ignition Subaru GL

Have a broken ignition in my Subaru GL.
 

It has an indexing issue and has no spring on the "start" setting. 

Basically the key just floats around and you have to start the car and then bump it back off the starter into the perfect place. 

Is there a way to repair these or am I screwed? 

I'd really like to keep one key for the doors and ignition.

What I did on my 86 GL was i bypasses the entire igition key assembly.  i left it there as it locks the steering wheel.  i ran the wires down to the small open "box" left of the steering wheel near the base of the dash.  i got two of the largest toggle switches from NAMPA and the largest push button start switch and i permanently hot wired the ignition.  one switch for the accessorys and one for the actual ignition.  if they want to steel my car they have to figure it out as it cannot be seen unless you get right down there and look.  and it still needs the key to unlock the steering.  Subaru wanted 83.00 bucks for a new one and like you i didn't want two keys etc.....  good luck its not a hard fix

I want it to be in the ignition. Need to pass an inspection less mickey mouse spoob means less hassle.

 

As is it probably won't pass.

If that breaks on mine... first, I'd take apart the switch to see what happened, if I could fix it. If no, then pull the ignition and door locks off another car.

I have taken apart the steering wheel covers and replaced the spring mechanism by using parts from a used vehicle.  It is not a big deal.  You do not need to change keys.

Just bought the actual switch part from an ignition today. Indexing is built into that part. Will be a 5 minute replacement. 

Also got a grille which means I'll be inspection ready really soon.
