macman
Lots of other engine noises in that video, So it kind of makes it a little harder to discern the noise. My sooby has piston slap. The best way to tell is: Does the noise seem loudest just after a cold start then gets quieter as it warms up? If yes then like my car you have piston slap. And their is not much that can be done about it either. Check out this video by a Subaru guru.
gbhrps
winginit, Years ago I had a 97 OutBack Wagon that developed the piston slap, very noticeable when cold, but not so much when the engine warmed up. It didn't sound anything like what I hear in your video at all. What I hear is a hard mechanical rapping noise, totally unlike the dull "pock pock pock" sound that my engine made. Yours is much sharper, and sounds as if something is way out of tolerance and is striking another hard surface....... a bad rod or crank bearing..... a bent pushrod (yes, Subies don't have them) .... or something similar. I'd be letting a service tech put a stethoscope on the engine to track down whatever the source, before you do any damage to the engine. Good Luck! idosubaru
it's piston slap or rod knock. piston slap gets better as it warms up and will stay the same for years with no issues. rod bearings will get worse quickly and eventually you'll have confirmation soon enough. winginit
Thanks for the advice and replys, Well it sounds the same first start or hot, actually my get a little quieter as it runs and warms up. i also i noticed and the guy that is using it noticed that it appears to be a little quieter , i would not say it is cured i`m just hope full. if it blows up i guess i can change the engine easy enough.. a ej.2.2 with 115k miles with rod knock must have had a abusive past life. when i got the car the oil was black and 2 quarts low, with a blown HG , bad Cam censor thanks
