idosubaru
Are 2000-2004 rear axles interchangeable? This shows different part numbers and someone said today they are a different length? https://subaruparts.com/parts/2003/SUBARU/Outback/VDC?siteid=218240&vehicleid=44981&diagram=7522655&diagramCallOut=5 Just curious... Fairtax4me
Not sure why, but I noticed the same looking in the FSM. As far as I can tell they were different starting in 90 all the way up to at least 04, probably beyond.
1 Lucky Texan
hmmm...could the LSD rear diff in the 'weather' package be the difference? no one has ever mentioned an external difference in anything I've read - just internal. It says 3.0 liter, maybe it isn't length - but axle dimaeter for more strength? Edited July 14, 2016 by 1 Lucky Texan
Bantum
Might be this : axle assy manual trans - vs - axle assy auto trans, 3.0 liter Cheers, Bantum ...
987687
The 3.9 diff in the legacy SS has different axles on both sides for the LSD drive or something... I think the side difference is because of the part that goes through the seal, it has some spirals cut into the surface I think for keeping oil from getting out. You can see what I mean in the uppen axle in this pic: http://i.imgur.com/mqb0ysx.jpg
