ferp420
I had a bad head gasket that blew out the compression ring on first fire up made a ticking noise and still had 140 psi on the compression tester others where right about 180psi I've also had a intake gasket go bad and that side of the motor stopped getting fuel no vacume and today when I was buttoning up my swap i found a loose vacume line that caused a very similar issue but to be honest it will run and drive even idle on 3 cylinders they will even run on 2 so you have another problem probabaly a few compounding maybe try some starting fluid if it smooths out than it could be a carb issue if not than look for vacume leaks don't use ether to check for vacume leaks though if there is any spark jump its over its probably something very simple the wires are in the wrong order Or in the right order but in the wrong spot on the cap witch would cause the plug to fire while the valve is open and cause your ticking
Sapper 157
Update. OK, so I owe a huge apology to all of you who suggested that it was the carburetor. Turns out I took it to the Subaru specialist, and he was more of a NewGen/EJ25 specialist. But he offered to poke around the engine anyways. We were checking all the different connections, and he came to the conclusion that it was not a misfire. Just for good measure He decided to spray some brake cleaner around the carburetor and you my idle returned and the click went away. So now it looks like I'm taking this doggon carburetor off again and going to be making sure that it never ever has another vacuum leak in its life. thanks to all for all of your help and support, and I'm sorry if I was a little bit frustrating to deal with at times. DaveT
Glad you got a clue to follow. My 86 had a carb, but that was a long time ago.

Sapper 157
Is there anyone here who has a shop or knows a shop in Boise, Idaho that works on old gens? I replaced the carburetor gaskets twice And while it did help, it is still acting like it has a massive vacuum leak and a misfire and I am at a complete loss as to what it could be. turbosubarubrat
Did you remember to tighten the egr tube when you had the intake off?
Sapper 157
Did you remember to tighten the egr tube when you had the intake off? Ya know.... As a matter of fact, when I was tightening it, I did accidentally cross thread it... Do you think that could be the issue? I didn't think it would be a problem but I guess it would cause issues cause there is vacuum going through the egr isn't there?

Please see the section on egr stuck open in the link below http://www.enkivillage.com/egr-valve.html Having a leak due to cross threading is probably very similar. Dee2
"it is still acting like it has a massive vacuum leak and a misfire and I am at a complete loss as to what it could be." Did you ever run the vacuum test to verify if the problem is in fact a vacuum leak ? A vacuum test is easy to do and can help you diagnose engine problems and tell you a lot of information about the health of your engine. YouTube has plenty of info on how to use/read a vacuum gauge.
