dp213
I need to replace an engine in a 90 loyale. Someone else tore the motor apart and I don't have the intake. What I'm wondering is, are the TBI mfi long blocks interchangeable? From what I have read the car could have either one. I will have the original intake tomorrow, I just need to find a good motor and am hoping I can get either long block and use it. Thanks Dp
DaveT
IF you are looking at SPFI 1800 EA82 engines, the block and heads from 87 t0 93 are the same. There were variants of the heads, but it's minor internal stuff that doesn't effect using them. I've swapped engines between 86 and 93, by changing the intake. if I needed to due to harness differences. There are some different connectors used, but all the same sensors / functions. dp213
Very cool, so it's basically like putting a 95 ej22 in place of a 98 ej25, which is a very easy swap that I have done many times.
dp213
Ot even a user comparison is using a 93 ej22 and putting the 95 ej22 intake on it.
dp213
Wow, auto correct sucks????. That was supposed to say, or even a closer comparison
dp213
So I have a line on a mpfi motor from a 1989 xt. It has low miles on it, but he said it dies when in get warmed up. Will the spfi intake from the 90 loyale work on that motor
DaveT
I am not certain, but I think the mpfi heads and intake are different?
dp213
The intake probably is, I just don't know about the heads
DaveT
Looking at the sketches in my 86 fsm, the intake and heads look different between spfi and mpfi. Not interchangeable. Passages and bolts won't line up. I've never had a mpfi so I could be missing something. The spfi manifold / head meet with 3 bolts. There is a small odd rectangular coolant passage inboard. One round air passage outboard. The mpfi kind of looks like it has 2 passages for the air. The sketches are not highly detailed.
dp213
Are the carbureted motors changeable to spfi
DaveT
I did take my carbed 86 block and heads, and bolt on a spfi manifold, and it worked fine. I put the engine into a newer spfi body, so it wasn't a conversion, it was an engine block swap. The spfi manifold was the one in the car that needed the swap. So it would be like what your original post is.
