Fuel leak and starting issues in 2002 Subaru Outback Sedan H6 3.0

Recommended Posts

A month ago smelled gas really strong inside my car. Took to the shop

and they said the fuel line was leaking in the engine. Prior to taking it

into the shop when I tried to start the car it would crank but not turn

over until 2-3 tries. Had fuel line replaced. Thought it would solve

the cranking but not starting issues but it came back. I was due

to have the spark plugs and fuel filter replaced so I did last week.

Next day same starting issue. Usually happens after the car has

sat for about an hour or two. Cranked but would not start until

third try. Just got back from driving it and I see something leaking

from around the gas tank. Pretty sure it is leaking fuel.

So very frustrated and don't know what could be causing this.

What should I have the shop check? Fuel pressure, obviously

check leak. Not even sure if the starting issue is related to

the fuel leak issue.

well, there could be a coupla problems here I guess but, having the shop double-check their work is gonna be a good idea. If you don't trust them, have someone else take a look.

sometimes the cap/o-ring on the fuel pumps in this generation of cars can develop a problem that would have symptoms similar to yours - but without the fuel leaking.

The pump was leaking?

if you replaced the pump - i'd get it back because it only needs a new cap and oring.

the aftermarket fuel pump is questionable, they have a high percentage of issues and are not 10 year/100,000 mile solutions like the original pump.

i'd keep the old one as a back up.
