westOZZY
G'day guys First post here, but ive been reading everything i possibly can baout the EA82T, because I just bought a 87 touring wagon (im in Australia) that has a EA82T dropped in it. Its running nicely, and im just about to get a whole exhaust from turbo back (probably 2.5", 3" is AU$200 more) which will cost about AU$600-800. But, searching the net, ive discovered the a IHI VF12 turbo from a liberty (legacy) RS (http://autospeed.com/cms/A_0098/article.html). Now amazingly its in my small city of Perth and is going for AU$300. Also, i found in perth this..... MY00 WRX STI turbo back factory exhaust (larger then WRX standard) with STI aftermarket stainless exhaust muffler & tip $150 Now if these two could go together...what a team. ... even including labour, im looking at a sweet setup for less than the price of a 2.5" exhaust (including straight through muffler and cat) My question is: will this work easily, and if it does, is it worth it...? nkx
i think the legacy turbos are larger, so youll get more boost, but it will take longer to spool up. as far as the exhaust goes, backpressure in a turbo car is the devil. the less, the better. carfreak85
The legacy turbo will allow more power with less boost. The EA82T turbos are junk. The parts you mentioned will work, but will not bolt up to the existing parts so flanges will need to be fabbed up too.
RXTurbo
WestOZZY - take a look at http://www.ausubaru.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi It's an Australian board and there are members there that live near you and others have put VF12's onto EA82's. I would like to say though, if you are not intending on changing the ecu at the same time it will be more pain than gain - you should look at a smaller turbo such as the VF10 or VF08 which make boost at lower RPM. There has also been good success with TD04's. The STI exhaust should fit, at least the front section - I had a EJ20 Turbo in an L series like yours and used the factory dump pipe and a custom tail end. Both of those items are selling for a good price, if you buy them and they don't work, you should at least make your money back...
