Lverano
As some of you know who read my posts on here, I have had a front howl/buzz, which reverberates through my automatic gear selector a bit, from what is presumed to be the front differential, since I bought the car some months ago. The noise is only persistent on acceleration after 30mph, immediately goes away when you let off the gas. Has not gotten any worse in 3k miles or so now. I've added Lucas 75w 110 to the front, but no change in the noise. As a last shotgun hail Mary I'm going drain a court and dump a quart of Redline heavy shockproof gear oil in there. Anyone ever try this stuff?? I'm not sure of its compatibility with my diff, but I'm willing to chance it. It's supposed to flow like 75w90 and have the thickness properties of 75w250. If I have any success I'll post a YouTube of the reduction of noise. Maybe it will hush some phantom noises I have too... But that's another story... 1 Lucky Texan
I have RL Lightweight SP (Smurf Blood !) in the front and rear diff of my wife's 03. In the rear diff of my WRX and have run it in the 5spd of my WRX. I am considering going back to in the 5spd. I don't think it will harm the diff, but no fluid will repair something broken.
matt167
I had a 99 Lego sus with a howling front diff and I put in shockproof heavy. Helped a little but not enough to justify cost
Lverano
Well here is a vid of the noise, I'm hoping it will quiet this.. https://youtu.be/mvgfsWPXER0 Here is a video I found with a sound very similar to mine, although mine is not nearly as bad as this. And I don't get any noise when I'm off the gas other than that we have a very very similar sound here. Edited September 5, 2016 by Lverano
CNY_Dave
My front diff noise did not come up through the shifter, was quite loud with the door open though!
CNY_Dave
That is a lot quieter than mine was, not bad to live with at all. Of course I'm the guy that drove on a bad wheel bearing so long I had to drive with ear plugs...

Of course I'm the guy that drove on a bad wheel bearing so long I had to drive with ear plugs... Well like Rex told Andy, "hope is a dangerous word". But you know, I don't care. I bought some Redline heavy shockproof and I want to see what it does, and there is this, a trip to the Flemish cap if you will.... I won't spend $48.00 on a 12oz bottle, but I'd like to know of anyone who has tried it.. See link. I do plan on a video after I put the Redline in. One way or another. vtwinjunkie
I wonder if something like this would work for my rear diff noise. subscribed

Helped a little but not enough to justify cost Likewise, but I would definitely use the product in a good differential, and the slight improvement is a clear diagnosis, if the sound wasn't enough already, the front diff is BAD. https://youtu.be/KUoE_tAFxyE
Lverano
Nope didn't fix it, but slightly noticeable difference with the redline heavy shockproof
CNY_Dave
I used some lucas to stretch mine out, was so thick and sticky it slung off the ring gear, up onto the bottom of the dipstick, and literally pushed it out and spewed all over. Omega gear oil or nano lube additive, I'd like to know if anyone has ever used either of these products to silence a diff? No YouTube videos or anything I could google on it at all..
