Kootenays kid
I am just curious what the limit is of these cars, has anybody rolled them over, blown up engines, been mud bogging? I have been pushing the Mongolian mule up some pretty steep roads and quad tracks lately. I hate though how there is no low end, if you bog out during a steep climb you are pretty much pooched, unless you put the E-brake on and rev it right up, but even than. I have thought about putting a 4wd dual range in the car, but is it even worth the time to get to those 10% of the time places which 4 low would help, does it even make that big of a difference with these cars? I know in the yota it would climb til it flipped backwards in 4low. Just looking for some stories on crazy things that you have done in these vehicles. DaveT
I have a dual range 5 speed trans laying around that needs a home. Someone on here will likely know the ratios, but iirc it was noticeably slower in low range.
Logan K
If your turning bigger tires then stock, 4lo is absolutely necessary. Its an easy sway to do. I rolled mine over on a steep grade once, got lucky and landed wheels down with no broken window glass

Scott in Bellingham
Steep hill climbing and bigger tires you need the Dualrange low gear and the EJ swap sure is nice, lots of lowend power
Subaru_dude
Dual range makes a huge difference. Well worth the swap if you regularly venture out onto steep trails.
ferp420
A three foot around bolder will stop it about %95 of the time lol
Kootenays kid
Interesting! I have a line on a DR transmission for $100, but I would have to remove it off the current vehicle in a field. I'll message you for more details on the DR transmission you mentioned. That Subaru Tarantula wagon is very nice, little over kill for my daily driver, but I would drive it daily. Seems to be that the valve covers always want to leak oil, any one had this issue? I am more interested in the DR for towing a snowmobile on a trailer up hill. If just about almost all of this forum is based on subaru offroading one might think that they do pretty good offroad in stock form. The DR 5 speed has a 1.59 low,not nearly as good as a toyota but still pretty good. Look up some videos of NW washington offroad on youtube to get an idea of what the cars are capable of.Most of the vehicles have a standard 2-4" of lift, some 27-29" tires, welded rear diff, and of course a DR 5 speed. However there are some outliers, jeff's yellow wagon "butters" is pwered by an ea81 engine,8" of lift and 31's even though it is gutless .scott's blue legacy was AWD with no center diff lock to it had some problems with some obstacles. skishop69
Scott's old rig with the engine mounted transversely in the passenger area was a beast. Definitely off road only. lol

Norcalbratcap
Dr is the only way to go even if it's just the 4spd, i have taken my old wagon and current brat most wouldn't dare without a winch and a 3day supply of food, mud bogs, steep hill climbs, river crossings, gnarly rutted out woodland trails, sand dunes been there and done it all bone stock, best part? The look of shock on the face of the guy in the stuck toyota when i bomb up the hill past him then pull him out on the way back through, only ever been stuck a few times and all of those few were places heavy trucks would have been doomed where as i can just dig a little path for the wheels or jack it up and fill in the ruts or even just pick it up and move it out of harms way lol.
