Ea81 brat rebuilt ready to reassemble

Recommended Posts

Hey guys it's been a few months but my ea81 has been rebuilt and is ready for reassembly and installation, took the block to a local machine shop for them to do the crankshaft and main bearings also got honed and new pistons and rings, there wasn't a motor shop around that would touch it (including the subaru dealership) and on 3 occasions was literally told to perform Intercourse with a horse, so i took it to the only machine shop that said yes, and also knew what it was, and they did the job for $1500, had to do some morally questionable and I'm fairly certain illegal things to pay for it, but hooray its done, just got it back a few days ago and now i have a few reassembly questions.

1. The bypass valve on the oil pump is it supposed to have something in that hole? I don't remember anything being there and don't see anything in my parts that looks the part but it does look as if something goes there because of the spring and all.

2. Pushrods, i had them all labled when they were sent in with the heads to be cleaned and they came back in a slightly less accurate not labled at all sort of way...... soooo what is going to be the best way to reinstall them?

3. Also a torque spec sheet would be great namely oil pump i have an old book and it has things like heads, bearing caps, and flywheel but not things like intake and oil pump.

Thanks guys.

Having just replaced my oil pump recently, I can tell you that there is an O ring that goes in the area you referenced.  Guaranteed it will leak like crazy without it.  As far as torque...Because everything is primarily sealed with O rings, and the bolts are pretty small, I just went snug plus a quarter turn or so.  I am sure there must be a spec somewhere, but for sure don't go crazy.

I can't help you on the push rod question.  I do have a FSM, and will see if I can find anything for you.

1: If you dont have this in ur kit, heres what you need

2: I may have mixed up push rods befor. I think its simply good practice to keep those components in order as they were removed. Lifters to cam, rods to lifters/rockers etc. since they are all being reused, they have worn in together a certain way. If your not replacing the cam or lifters, IMO having them in order is probably more important. If all the rods and lifters passed your inspection, the push rods can go back in with the order of your choosing. What choice do you have?

+1 on the o-ring. The push rods are really no big deal. A lot of guys will tell you they have to go back where they came from because they wear at different rates and wear to fit the lifter and rocker. There is truth to this, however, if there are no lips or scoring on either end, it really doesn't matter. If you do find a lip or scoring, take some 320 grit sandpaper and lightly clean them up. Follow that with some 600 to remove the scratches and then some 0000 steel wool to polish them. You'll be fine.

The ball and spring are inside the oil pump housing, so unless you disassembled it, the O ring is all that you need to worry about.  I am reasonably certain that the "right" side of the engine would be the passenger side.
