majorben
Hi, I'm new to this forum, and I need to ask this question because I recently picked up a 98 Legacy Outback Wagon with an automatic transmission. I believe that it is a 4 speed transmission (at least that is what I am reading from the specs), but my question relates to the engine RPMs. What is the approximate RPMs for the speed (MPH) ranges for each gear? The reason that I am asking this question is because I own other cars (a bit newer) and neither one of those (which are not Subaru's) are running at about 2200 RPMs at 65 MPH. I have notice that in the Outback wagon, that it runs about 500-700 RPMs higher at 65 MPH. I'm sure that this is ok due to the higher gear ratios, but I just want to be sure that nothing is wrong. The Outback has standard size tires and appears to otherwise run great. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize if this question has already been answered. Thank you. matt167
That car has 4.44 gears. That's normal
987687
You should be running around 3k RPM at 70, as mentioned, it has a 4.44 final drive. If you want to use a gear ratio calculator, these are the transmission gear ratios: 1st: 3.027 - 2nd:1.619 - 3rd:1.000 - 4th:0.694 - R:2.272 Remember if the torque converter isn't locked the RPM will be about 10% higher.
