Nbe1210
My exhaust is again beyond repair on my 97 Legacy Brighton Wagon. Even though the car still runs well I am hesitant to invest $600-700 at this point in its life. I have found someone in town who is parting out a 98 Impreza wagon and this might be my answer (depending on what price they are asking). Could it fit with some small modifications? I would imagine that the Impreza exhaust would be a bit short but a little creative welding might do the trick? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. 86BRATMAN
Not without modification, the impreza exhaust is roughly 5" shorter than the legacy. A could of the hangers are also in different places.
Nbe1210
Thanks for the info. That was my concern without actually seeing the exhaust laid out under the car. Are the hangers, bends and cats/sensors in the same spots? I wonder if it is as easy as extending a flange 5 inches somewhere although it never is. 86BRATMAN
Driver's side hanger on the muffler is too long, it'll have to be cut it'll live in the tow hook. The hanger on the midpipe may fit correctly if you extend the piping before it, otherwise it'll be off by a good bit. Strategic placement of the extension(s) will make it work though. Nbe1210
The Impreza exhaust is only $50 from the down pipe all the way back with a good muffler. I think I will check it out and see how it looks for fit. It seems a little too good to be true. Thanks for the info and if anyone has any suggestions of what to be vigilant of I would appreciate it. Thanks again. Nick
Rooster2
The problem is that the Impreza and Legacy are two different size cars, with the Legacy being longer then the Impreza. This makes it really difficult to do a swap. If you want used, go to a wrecking yard, any 96-99 Legacy wagon, or Legacy Outback system will work without modification. Suggest you check around for a muffler shop that does cut, bend, and weld muffler systems together. They are usually family owned muffler shops, and never any of the chain muffler shops like Midas, Car X, etc. If you can find a family owned shop, they will cut out and replace only what is bad, or at worse replace the system. Either way, the cost will be a lot less, more like max in the $200 range, or less if just certain parts of the exhaust system need replacement. I have kept my 2 old Outbacks going for years with just exhaust parts swapped in as needed. Did some internet research in your behalf, and found this company does cut, bend, weld exhaust work, along with towing. Don't know how close they are to where you live, but it is a start, if you want to look around on the internet, under "Dover NH, auto muffler shops" you may find more listings. 86BRATMAN
I've used impreza exhausts on legacys several times, both aftermarket and stock replacement stuff. It's really not that difficult, nor expensive.
Nbe1210
My mechanic lives a few houses down. I'm going to offer to pay him to come look at it with me and see what he thinks. I have no welding skills or equipment and he will be the one doing the work. He has repeatedly patched my exhaust for the last 2 years but said the metal is too thin and rusted. I'm no welder but looking at it I feel he is right. He's always been more than fair with me so I have no reason to doubt him (he usually charges me $30-$50 for the patches. I don't know any mechanics that you can drive away for anything less than $100). Does anyone think I will have any troubles with the cats/o2 sensors? Codes or rough running? Thanks for all the info. Keep it coming please. You guys are the best. Edited October 25, 2016 by Nbe1210
86BRATMAN
Cats and o2 sensors are the same as what is on your car already. unless they are bad there will be no problems.
