Help! Doing seals on 1983 GL-10 EA81 5 speed front wheel drive trans

Recommended Posts

I have heard two different things on this. One is that you have to pull the trans and split the case to do seals, the other says it's a pretty simple job where you just need to pull the axle.

What do we figure here? Also, any tips on doing those seals would be awesome! Thanks!

Pop the seal out carefully with a hook tool and don't scratch the crank. Lube the inside of the new seal with oil and gently tap it in with a small hammer. Use a 1/4" drive to seat it flush. Tap it lightly going in a circle around the seal. If you have a piece of thick walled steel tubing or pipe just slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal, you can use that and a block of wood over the opposite to drive it in. Either way, use minimal force to hammer it in until seated.

I'm pretty sure that the axle seals on this transmission are installed from the inside. There are two ways to deal with this that I am aware of. First is to pull the trans, split the case open, and then tap the seals out towards the inside. The second way is to pull the front axle and then remove the locking tab from the large backlash nut on the side of the transmission. Mark this big nut very carefully as it sets the preload on the front differential bearings as well as the ring and pinion gear backlash. You must reinstall the preload nut exactly the same number of turns in and to the same locking point that you marked earlier. If you put these large nuts back on in the wrong position it can destroy the transmission. Be sure to replace both the seal and the large "O" ring on the outside of the backlash nut.

No more burning 90 wt gear oil smoke coming in through the heater vents :D
