tire size

I need new tires for my 90 Loyale 4WD wagon. I've gotten differing recommendations for size. The placard on the drivers column says 165/13 when talking about load. I currently have 165/80/13 on the car. TireRack recommends 185/70/13. Other on-line stores say 175/70/13. What gives?

All those sizes will fit, and at one time or anther probably came standard on various models. You have to understand that not all models had the same size stock. 2WD EA81's had 175's, and 4WD's had 185's for example.....

I've 185/70 13R on my 89 loyal and they are working fine, one more thing you should check is the rim, make sure they're 5 J(wide, those are the numbers on the rim), because the older ones were 4,5 J,so it's not good to put wider tires, the middle of the tire will get bald before the rest of it, tire would look like this ( , and you want it to be like this [ ,

If you're more concerned with the winter driving go for the narrower (165).
