Divisible_By_0
If there is something wrong with your engine that is not fixable Most people will probably say an EJ22 swap and you can keep your current trans if wanted.

Jman1991
it should go a lot faster then that... my 93 has no problem getting up 75 mpr freeway speeds and its over 200k you have to get those rpms up with the EA82s though

alpop
Nope, single port fuel injected I believe. I used to have a '90 that would come close to 90mph on a good day. What RPM is she showing at 55? Manual or automatic?
DaveT
Something is wrong with it. Mine go 65mph at 4000rpm with a 3 speed auto.
Dee2
Run a simple vacuum test. That can tell you a lot about the health of the engine. Depending on the results other tests can follow to help find the cause of your problem.

DaveT
Any decent auto parts store will have a vacuum gauge for testing intake manifold vacuum. It should come with instructions. You may want a T fitting also. No load revving is completely different than getting power with a load. Could be starving for fuel, partially blocked exhaust among other things. Almost all of my experience with these EA82 engines is with the 3AT automatic transmission. They don't really start feeling peppy until they get over 3000rpm, closer to 4000. Yes, if you floor the gas pedal with a 3AT, it triggers a switch that energizes a solenoid on the transmission to downshift 1 gear.
