cyama167
Hi Fellow Subaru Nuts, I'm working on a '92 Loyale 4x4 with auto trans. Its the EA82. I was experiencing coolant leaking around the timing belt cover and assumed the water pump had failed. While I was on this project, I decided to change the timing belts and seals and oil pump seals. When I pulled of the rear timing covers, I noticed evidence of coolant on the hole on the head of the passenger side. The driver side is dry, but it looked like there is staining there at one point. Is this indicating a problem in the head or is this residual coolant from the water pump? If so, are there checks I can do to confirm this while I have the front of the engine apart? Thanks! TomRhere
That is the drain port for the spark plug well, there's one for each. Intake manifold gasket, or the small coolant hose from top center of engine to T-stat housing would be my guess as to source of coolant leak. cyama167
Thank you! I will inspect that area of the engine.
scoobiedubie
A failed water pump allows the fan blades to wobble and bite into the back side of the radiator. A leaky water pump will leak coolant out the drain hole in the bottom. If you did not plug up the hole above the bearing with some gasket sealer, then you will allow dirt into the water pump bearings and seals, and could get a failure in 15,000 25,000 miles. Coolant on the left timing belt cover could also be sprayed on by a hole in the radiator, or come from a leak in the O-ring that seals the pipe going into the water pump or a leak in the tube connection into the top of the water pump, or come from loose bolts that attach the water pump to the block. ferp420
That would be pretty amazing if that was from the water pump to get all the way over there with out getting every other part of the engine wet is nearly impossible I second the intake or thermostat housing leak down the plug drain holes
