nighthawk2006
I am getting pretty surprised by how many high milage ej22's I'm seeing. When my 06 WRX just passed 100k and my dads 96 legacy outback that had almost 270k was running better than mine, i started wondering what was going on with these engines! How many miles do you guys have on your EJ22's? Super curious!

AdventureSubaru
The 90s dohcs were not great by subaru standards. The phase 2 sohc was much improved.
mikec03
I have/had 6 subarus with 2.2 ej engines. I can't answer your questions since I either sold them or took them to the junk yard for other reasons, but they had no engine problems. I still have one with 260 k which I hope to make it to 300K, if I can keep it together with bondo and fiberglass.
sparkyboy
My 96 has 315,000 without problems! IMHO the ej22 is best in an 80s body :-) My girls 86 GL has an ej22 with nearly 200,000 miles, the last 1500 or so in the GL and I simply love that car

GeneralDisorder
Im so confused as to how the 2.5 headgasket is still a issue. Do the newer 2.5's still have this issue? The issue was resolved in 2010. Use of the 770 gaskets will fix engines back to 2000. For engines prior to that you must change pistons to use the new gasket. pontoontodd
1996 Impreza EJ22 with 255k and still going strong. Been overheated countless times, first time hit a deer and lost all the coolant, then had no fans for a while since the rad had been pushed back, overheated a bunch more times. Only one time in the years I've owned it that it wouldn't start, usually sits for a week or two at a time outside. Planning on getting an Outback starter for it eventually. Had to replace the clutch and trans over 200k, other than that it's been a great car. The best entertainment per dollar of any car I've ever owned. sparkyboy
Sorry to hear about your Loyale, nighthawk. If you still have the old girl maybe we can do an ej22 swap someday! I'm down to help! Good luck on finding a first generation turbo legacy, those are really cool cars! When you get one you have to get a lowering kit, those cars look super cool when they are slammed! I have seen a handful of them on Craigslist around Colorado. If the car gods are good to you, maybe you can find another turbo leggo that has been wrecked or something but has a good turbo ej for your Loyale! Cheers man

msmithmmx
I have a 97 2.2 in my 98 obw. 249k. Small oil leak driver side cam cap. Runs like a champ.
aschwerin
305k on a '97 Brighton wagon. I'm the second owner, got it at 240k. Timing belt jumped around 285k. Replaced it, and kept on ticking. I see the engine still zipping down the road as the body falls apart around it.
mikaleda
My mom's old ej22 in her 1990 legacy auto sedan made it to 320k before it blew a head gasket, she owned it from 170k and had it for 14 years.
Stevo F
My '98 Legacy wagon with an EJ22 has a mere 125K miles. I expect at least 200K more. Just a little piston slap when cold. Edited March 14, 2017 by Stevo F
