StephenJ101
Per the service manual for the EA82 engine, it states to retorque the head bolts after the engine has warmed and cooled after new head gaskets are installed. My question is has there been a new and improved / effective way to torque the bolts on this EA82 engine during the initial installation so the retorquing is no longer necessary? I'm hoping there is experience and success by torquing the head bolts initially therefore, disassembly to retorque is not required. Any suggestions and insight is appreciated. DaveT
If you use Fel Pro perma-tourque gaskets you don't retourque. As far as I know, oem still require it.

scoobiedubie
The trick with cylinder head bolts is to tighten them as tight as you can get, them. Then let it sit over night and come back and try and get a little more squeaks out of it the next day. The other trick is to use perfectly clean washers and bolts, along with the cylinder head should be degreased. That combination helps hold the torque. If you have never done it before, note that the cylinder head holes have both shoulders on them and no shoulders on them. The cylinder head bolts are two different lengths. The longer bolts go in the holes with shoulders. If you put the short bolts in holes with shoulders, then you will strip out the thread in the block. Which is very bad news. DaveT
Follow the procedure in the manual, regarding order of tightening, and torque for each stage. It is quite possible to over torque them, and strip them. Clean the holes and the bolts, and oil them before assembly.
