You don't unscrew that grooved cap/ cover on transfer do yah

 

you absolutely DO NOT want to shift that thing.

 

after 04 or so - maybe depending on model, Subaru went with integrated shafts that just pop in/out. There's a springy circlip in a groove near the end of the splines - you'll see.

If you want to change your bearing preload and backlash and destroy your transmission - yes.  

He already told you how to do it - pry it out - you're making it more complicated for yourself by ignoring his comment and trying to find some other way or trick. 

 

I would guess most people simply need more room to work since it requires reasonable force or access for nearly 180 degree application of said force. 

 

Get the car high up in the air so you can get some good leverage and impact on it.  I'll use a piece of 2x4 and a hammer and tap around the edge of the CV cup.  Or pry it out, be careful not to leverage against something fragile.

Sometimes a nice long chisel and a hammer will crack it loose. You want most if not all of the force being directed as outwardly as possible. Find the best angle for that. Some are more stubborn than others, but there is nothing at all the needs to be removed for the inner portion to come out.

Just out of curiosity, not knowing the year, did you rotate the axle at least 180 degrees to check for the pin? Is the axle completely out and free of the hub?
