buying a brat

Recommended Posts

My son will soon be 16 and I am thinking of trying to buy a BRAT a restore it, as we are a family of Subaru lovers (1-outback, 1-legacy, 1-impreza). Since he's just learning would I be able to find one with an automatic transmission? What else do I look for? Also, is there a reputable place or a good source where I might find one?

Thanks in advance for all help.

an automatic for a brat will be rare, i think only 83-84 models had them?

any older wagon has an identical platform with the brat. you can turn a brat into an automatic, but if the boy is gonna learn to drive, might as well get him on the stick shift.

i got 3 soobs laying around, all with gas in them, all 5spds. but i have a suspended license, and all my drivers cant drive stick, and continue to burn all kinds of gas in their taurus.

wouldnt it be easier if more people could drive a manual? my 2 cents

stick around this board long enough and someone in your area should meet your needs.

My first car was a manuel transmission because I wanted to learn how to drive one. I think everyone should learn/know how to drive a manuel.

Why not start out with one?

In my area older Subarus are hard to find. I'd suggest keeping your eyes pealed and see if you can find one locally.

If not.......have you tried the "Market Place" on the board?

If you find a good source for old Brats let me know and don't tell anyone else:lol:

Good Luck,

Glenn

i am 16 and a proud owner of a MANUAL 79 brat... i ahve yet to actually drive it on a road but i have logged many hours on that car...

i am learning to drive on the road using an auto but i am very capable of useing a standard...

and trust anybody who has used one... an old soob with an auto is horrible... the 3spds really put a drain on the engines power and it feels like you have a hampster under the hood giving the power... but if he really cannot drive a stick(the only reason i can think of is loss of hands or feet!) then i guess you could look around for a few months in search of one...

but however it goes... good luck!!!
