nicksubaru
00 outback 5mt awd ej25 clutch fork snaped on me. Easiest way to fix? Pull the motor? Pull the transmission?
AdventureSubaru
Pull the motor. Will save a few hours. replace the retainer clips with new ones while you're in there and grease eveything well. Generally this is the time for a clutch kit too unless you know it's very low miles.
golucky66
If you have a lift. Imo It's easier to pull the transmission. If you don't have a lift. Definitely the engine.
lmdew
If you have any other work that needs too be done on the engine, pull the engine. Other's notes above apply. I've done it both ways and like pulling the engine better.

nicksubaru
I was looking at different clutch kits, im not sure on the condition of this clutch has i have not had the car for that long. Is it wroth getting a stage 1 or 2 clutch, or better with oem rating?
AdventureSubaru
Oem. Exedy is the preferred brand.
GeneralDisorder
If you get a staged clutch, don't get an Exedy one. They have terrible pedal feel. Competition Clutch is our preferred choice for staged clutches. GD Edited March 7, 2017 by GeneralDisorder
nicksubaru
Is it worth even getting a staged clutch? Im not planning on doing any crazy stuff to this car. And this is only a daily driver.
nicksubaru
I live in the mountains, so theres alot of hill starts. That's kinda why i was thinking about a staged clutch. But i dont know anything about that. Thoughts?
GeneralDisorder
You don't need one. It's only going to increase pedal effort. You arent making enough power to exceed the limitations of the stock clutch so what's the point? GD
idosubaru
Imdew has one of the best points - replace valve cover gaskets, oil cooler gasket, timing belts, adjust/check valves while it's out and pull the engine. Trans can be the fastest of the two options based on simple math, it has far fewer components to remove - no A/C, power steering, alternator, coolant to drain... But working under the car can be annoying and time consuming, hence my use of the word "can" (and not always or preferably) - crawl under, constant rust/dirt rain showers in your eyes, forget a tool and crawl back out, not enough room so jack it up again for more clearance...etc If you're set up well - dropping a trans can be the fastest route....but pulling the engine is much more forgiving. Remove exhaust, driveshaft, axles, disconnect trans and out it comes and no coolant capture to worry about. Don't get much simpler process wise. nicksubaru
Ok cool. So then ill get a stock rated clutch kit. Stock brand to use? Hopefully its cheap cost wise....
matt167
Exedy is OEM. Cheap clutches are out there but you might not like the feel
GeneralDisorder
Definitely Exedy. GD
AdventureSubaru
Exedy is the proven standard. The cheaper ones on ebay and such are a really mixed bag. Some are fine and some wont get you far. it's usually not worth saving $50. to have to do the job twice.
nicksubaru
Ok. I just pulled the motor out today. And ill be Googling exedy
