83subaruGLchick
Hello, I just have a few random questions about my GL.... 1. My voltage fluxuates a lot it doesn't effect the battery being charged or anything besides it shakes the engine a lot and it almost seems as if I have a broken engine mount or something, it shakes and makes a rattle noise uncontrollably and its BECAUSE of the voltage BUT I'm unsure of what is rattling very badly. So my question is why do you think my voltage is fluxuating? AND what are the normal signs or a broken engine mount the whole front of the car shakes and it also only fluxuates at idle... 2. I bought this car with rear disc brakes already installed, they sound like theyre metal on metal when I break but there is quite a bit of brake pad material left so anyone know why that could be happening? Like the conversion was not done correctly? 3. What brakes do you run when you drill to a 6x5.5 lug pattern? do you have to change anything crazy besides the obvious like rotors and calipers like do the brake lines all fit into each other or do you have to change all of that too? 4. Rust repair for a non-welder/ametur body work person. THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL YOUR HELP!
GeneralDisorder
The voltage is probably fluctuating because the engine is idling poorly and at too low of a speed. If the alternator is not spinning fast enough it will cause the voltage to drop toward battery voltage (12.5). You need a solid 750 RPM idle to maintain reasonable alternator output and with a bunch of high draw devices turned on that may not be enough and you may still get a voltage drop at idle. But it's not the *cause* of the poor/low idle. You most likely need to address your ignition system, idle control, etc. GD

Roger87ea82t
1. To check your motor mounts you need to jack up the car and get underneath with a pry bar and see if there is looseness in the motor mount, you also need to check the transmission mounts too with a pry bar. 2.Be sure to check the inside brake pad not just the outside one. Feel the brake rotor on both sides with your hand, if it is running metal to metal it will feel rough not smooth.
Dee2
The rattle could lust be a loose bolt on something in the engine compartment. I had a very annoying rattle which I finally tracked down to a loose bolt on the alternator mount. Since you have voltage problems check your bolts on the alternator to make sure everything is snugged down proper. If that's not it - check all the other bolts on things to make sure on them too. DLGL8388
Voltage fluctuation could be a faulty regulator which is in the alternator. I've had a couple of them go bad. So if alternator belt is tight try replacing the alternator. Also check for bad ground wires to body and engine. You might have dirt in brakes. Try backing up then braking. Sometimes that gets it out.
