Installing a 2012 engine in a Outback 2007 2.5 EJ253 AVCS

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I just talked to a shop that claim they did hundreds of engine swaps puting a 2012 engine in a 2007 Outback. They said they don't want to share their ''recipe''. Do you have any knowledge or experience doing this ?

My Outback 2007 with 2.5 EJ253 avcs blew head gasket and oil spilled on the ground. The person driving the car did not notice and drove till the engine died. I feel like it's not worth a rebuild and those engines are hard to find or overpriced. 2012 engine is the first possible swap I heard of...

Not really a concern just a LOT of cleaning on the heads. I recently did the same job on a 2009. Several hours of disassembly and cleaning on the heads. Lots of oil passages on the AVLS models.

The block may come with a 7mm or 9mm pump. Since they are reman units that carry a 3 year/36k warranty we don't touch them. Just recommend 10w40 and full synthetic going forward.

Jasper does rebuilt engines for some of the Subarus now. If you can get one, they've got a 3yr, 100k miles warranty. It comes with heads, timing belt, water pump. Had to transfer the dipstick and some sensors, but pretty complete. Done well in my 2000 Forester so far.

Edit:  Here's the link to their info on it: http://www.jasperengines.com/blog/jasper-offers-remanufactured-subaru-25l-sohc-boxer-engine
